Let’s be honest. Most of our social media feeds, news channels and conversations are revolving around one thing at the moment – that bastard COVID-19. However, there are some people making isolation and tight government restrictions a little easier, like Tom Holland with his shirtless handstand IG challenge.

The Spider-Man actor took to Instagram this week to demonstrate to his 34M an “impossible challenge,” which involved manoeuvring into a shirtless handstand and sliding into a t-shirt, one-handed.
If that wasn’t enough to get you into a non-COVID sweat, Tom Holland nominated God’s gift to Earth, Jake Gyllenhaal to complete the same IG challenge.
Much to his followers’ delight, Gyllenhaal completed the challenge like a pro and went on to nominate his sister, Maggie Gyllenhaal, as well as 50 Cent and Hugh Jackman.
Judging by the reaction on Twitter, it’s safe to say both Jake Gyllenhaal and Tom Holland have eased our corona woes – even just for a few moments.
The shirtless handstand IG challenge isn’t the only one that has popped up on social media since the pandemic. Over the past few weeks, we’ve seen everything from push-up and planking challenges, to hilarious toilet paper-related ones and the TikTok-inspired couples challenge where pairs try to guess each other’s answers to relationship questions.
In an interview with the New York Times, Taylor Lauren, head of content marketing at Later – an Instagram marketing platform, said, “These challenges all started when people began to stay home and go into quarantine…Instagram usage has risen a lot in the past couple weeks and these challenges are way for people to interact with their friends and stay entertained while they have to stay home.”
If these IG challenges mean we can stay entertained in isolation and perve on Jake Gyllenhaal’s abs then it’s a win-win for everyone. Speaking of abs – Tom Holland also nominated Ryan Reynolds to take part in the challenge, so stay tuned for that.
