Joaquin Phoenix’s DGAF Interview At The Golden Globes Will Have You Loving Vegans

He's somehow done the impossible.

Between Ricky Gervais doing his usual hosting schtick to the inevitable snubbing of several worthy winners, the Golden Globes was yet another predictable snoozefest. But there was one eye-opening moment that kept things interesting and it came in the form of Joaquin Phoenix’s DGAF post-victory interview.

After giving an expletive-laden speech after winning the Golden Globe for Best Actor in a Drama, the Joker star was whisked backstage for another round of interviews and he was not too pleased with having to speak to a room full of people after having done exactly the same thing just minutes earlier.

There goes that smile.

What little of Joaquin Phoenix’s patience ran out almost immediately as he was asked the usual slew of questions on how he prepared for Joker, to which he responded how that is all “old news” and he’s “answered this for six months.”

He ultimately gave an answer on his preparations for Joker before turning the entire interview on its head by asking the assembled crowd, “Have you guys been sitting here all night? Do they bring you food? Do you have drinks?”

From there the interview quickly turned into a surprisingly pleasant chat about veganism as Phoenix was asked about the vegan menu that was served at the Golden Globes and he was more than happy to talk about it, saying “This is the first time [he had] ever eaten the food at this ceremony” and he thought it was “excellent.”

Without being pushy or overly preachy, Phoenix then goes on to talk about how agriculture is one of the leading causes of climate change, how “consuming animal products is no longer a personal choice” and how this is all “having drastic consequences around the world.”

After pushing other award ceremonies to embrace a vegan menu like the Golden Globes, Phoenix deemed the 2020 Golden Globes event to be great, saying that he’s “never been so proud to attend an awards ceremony as [he was] tonight.”

Joaquin Phoenix may have won a Golden Globe for Joker, but his greatest performance that night was how he not only managed to bring a new level of DGAF-ness to the ceremony, he also somehow managed to educate people about veganism and climate change in a way that made vegans seem cool.
