We’re heading into that period of the year where Hollywood is patting itself on the back and giving itself awards for all its “achievements” over the past 12 months. For 2020, Joaquin Phoenix is in pole position for all the statuettes due to his work on Joker but he’s doing none of that over-indulging that Hollywood loves to do.
What Joaquin’s doing instead is using his place in Hollywood to low-key save the world. Talk about irony given the destructive character he played in Joker.
After word got out that Joaquin played a part in making the Golden Globes go vegan for 2020, which was followed by a surprising post-victory interview where he talked about how agriculture is contributing to climate change instead of regurgitating Joker talking points, it turns out he’s also doing his part in reducing waste.
British designer Stella McCartney shared an Instagram post of Joaquin Phoenix rocking a custom-made Stella tuxedo and revealed that the actor will be rocking this exact same tuxedo at every award show he’ll attend in 2020 in an attempt to reduce waste and hopefully raise awareness about it.
Given how celebs and Hollywood are all about looking as glamorous as possible no matter what it takes, having a leading star like Joaquin wear “only” one suit for the entire awards season is almost like blasphemy.
It may not seem like that big of a deal for someone like Joaquin Phoenix to plug veganism while wearing a fancy Stella tux at the Golden Globes, but as a strange man in clown make-up once said:
When you’re one of the headlining names at a high-profile event like the Golden Globes where the whole world is watching and hung up on some movie you’re in that came out ages ago, why not use that platform to do what you can in an attempt to spread awareness about the important issues we and the earth are facing today?
Just give Joaquin Phoenix all the awards now because that means more opportunities for him to get up onstage in front of the world to talk about climate change and waste reduction in his acceptance speech. Oh and because his work on Joker was great and yada yada, but mainly for the important issues stuff.
