How Celebrity Pregnancy Announcements Became So Damn Extra

Nicki Minaj just dropped a baby bombshell.

They say a picture is worth a thousand words, but what about a collection of highly artistic images with multiple wigs and outfit changes? Are celebrity pregnancy announcements out of control?

We spoke about this on today’s episode of It’s Been A Big Day For…

Earlier today, Nicki Minaj announced her pregnancy to the world in a string of Instagram posts, saying: “Love. Marriage. Baby carriage. Overflowing with excitement & gratitude. Thank you all for the well wishes.”

However, perhaps more important than these words, Nicki Minaj gave us four photos of herself donning different wigs, posing in different backgrounds and flexing different high-fashion garments. Even in COVID-19 lockdown, Nicki Minaj has managed to give us one of the most extra pregnancy photoshoots of all time. Honestly, kudos to her.

While going above and beyond for a pregnancy announcement doesn’t feel too out of the ordinary for a celebrity, we’re forced to ask ourselves why this is and more importantly, when this became the norm.

After much research, we’ve deduced that pregnancy announcements seemingly became so damn extra once Beyoncé had a go at them. In case you can’t remember, Beyoncé announced her pregnancy with Blue-Ivy Carter to the world during a live performance at the MTV VMA Music Awards which included a literal mic drop at the end of powerhouse performance of ‘Love on Top’. And let’s not forget the twin-pregnancy announcement which became the most-liked photo on Instagram up until that point. Again, multiple photoshoots were involved

Queen of inventing pregnancy.

Given we can’t remember what pregnancy announcements were like before that, we’re going to say that 2017 was the year that it became essential for celebrities to post outlandish pregnancy announcement photoshoots because, at this point, they’re just wild.

Since then, to announce the birth of Stormi, Kylie Jenner released a full-on mini-documentary which has almost 100 million views on Youtube and – in our opinion – could have won an Oscar if it was submitted. Also, Grimes released one of the most futuristic pregnancy photoshoots of all time and it should honestly be hung up in some art gallery somewhere. And how could we forget, Katy Perry’s incredibly iconic music video for her banger of a ballad ‘Never Worn White’?

At this point, we can’t really blame them.

We can see how celebrities would want to control as much of their pregnancy-narrative as possible, and thus the idea of providing media outlets with official statements and images is somewhat appealing. But seriously, we hope that there is as much effort going into raising these kids as there is announcing their entrance into the world.
