Last night the entire country was transfixed, and for once it wasn’t on some horrible piece of news that made us all want to cry. No, we were all transfixed on three baboons that had high tailed it out of their holding facility and were running amok around the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital in Sydney.

Whilst serious concerns about the facility that the baboons escaped from had been raised as early as 2016, the male baboon had just been there to get a vasectomy and his two girlfriends were there to calm him down.
Depending on your view, I guess they either did a brilliant or a terrible job at keeping him calm.
As great as the baboons on the loose in Sydney were, they’re far from the only animal who has gone for a frolic where they shouldn’t have.
Water Buffalo In Sydney
In 2014, two water buffalo got away from a film set in Sydney Park, St Peters, and legged it down a busy street in Newtown – which was 2 kilometers away. At the time, a witness from the film set said that “They [the buffalo] are pretty angry, apparently. They’ve just disappeared totally.”

Llamas in Arizona
To be fair, it feels like animal escapes happen in the USA more than anywhere else, and I have no idea why. This time two llamas made a run for it in 2015 and found themselves being chased by cops all over Sun City, Arizona. They were eventually wrangled, but not before news helicopters were deployed all over the city.

Lions in Darwin
In 1984, three circus lions escaped in Mindil beach, Darwin. While llamas roaming free might have been an amusing sight, if you saw a couple of unfenced lions you might not be so happy. As you can imagine, they scared the crap out of everyone around them – including everyone at a wedding that one of the lions gatecrashed.
Orangutan in Adelaide
In further proof that orangutans are smarter than me, in 2009 an orangutan named Karta used a stick to short circuit the electric fence around her enclosure. She then piled up a heap more stick and jumped the fence. She spent half an hour wandering around the zoo before heading back to her enclosure voluntarily.
