The accountability hammer is working overtime lately and having sent the likes of Shane Dawson to the “cancelled” corner, it’s now got David Dobrik in its sights after old videos featuring the YouTuber doing racist things (one of which included a cameo from Liza Koshy) has resurfaced, prompting an “apology” that leaves much to be desired.
Speaking of YouTubers like David Dobrik being racist, the GOAT team talk about Shane Dawson being cancelled on ‘It’s Been A Big Day For…’ below:
This latest instalment of “popular YouTuber gets cancelled due to racist content” kicked off when an old video resurfaced of David Dobrik using the N-word and just being insensitive towards Black people.
A second video filmed in 2016 was later dug up and it featured David Dobrik and Liza Koshy doing racist impressions, only this time it was directed at Asians rather than Black people.
Needless to say that the internet quickly swung the accountability hammer in David Dobrik and Liza Koshy’s direction after these old videos came to light, prompting Liza to issue out a pretty damn good apology on Twitter for her past actions.
As for David, well he stayed silent for a few days before bringing up the topic in very vague, unspecific terms on his podcast, VIEWS with David Dobrik and Jason Nash.
While Dobrik acknowledges that he “missed the mark” on a “handful of occasions”, his apology quickly descends into non-apology territory as he doesn’t really apologise for anything or even mention the racist videos he’s made.
Another day, another YouTuber throwing out a half-arsed “I’m sorry that you feel bad for some dodgy thing I did” apology before trying to defend themselves and promising to “do better” in terms of himself and his videos.
You’d think that David Dobrik would at least say something of substance or show some genuine regret over his old racist videos, but right now he’s coming across as nothing more than another content creator who is too deep in their own bubble to realise they’re in the wrong and why what they did is so problematic.
