All The Ways That COVID-19 Has Been Etched Into Pop Culture

Our grandkids will have history tests about coronavirus memes.

The COVID-19 pandemic is pretty bloody scary. We’re slogging it through isolation at the moment, but when future generations look back at this time they won’t get to experience all the fear and boredom of quarantine like we are now. Instead they’ll see what parts of COVID-19 we immortalised into pop culture.

For example, PornHub’s Coronavirus spinoff. Yes, really. Let the GOAT Team take you through it…

Music

There are two major categories here: the covers and the originals. We’ve seen everything from JoJo’s Get Out to Anastacia’s I’m Outta Love get a coronavirus themed re-working, and frankly I’m not sure many of us will ever be able to sing the originals again.

Then we have the songs that would never have existed without COVID-19. There is the Vietnamese hygiene song, the Ugandan MP singing about coming together, and the many remixes of Cardi B’s coronavirus video.

TV And Movies

The writers of your favourite TV shows have already plotted out what a coronavirus themed ep would look like. Leslie and Ann from Parks and Rec having walk-and-talks while staying six feet apart every day? I need it in my life.

There are already people speculating what the inevitable COVID-19 themed blockbuster will look like.

Memes

The thought of our grandkids having to sit their history exams and write about how we all used memes as a coping mechanism is so strange, but also nearly certain to happen. I’m willing to bet there will be an entire COVID-19 pop culture section that’s just made up of memes.

While we might not think a lot of memes, they’ll tell people in the future how we coped with boredom, and how we all found pictures of people messing with Zoom backgrounds relatable.

???

Today Singapore’s Government announced that they’re introducing five new superheroes to fight coronavirus. There’s Dr Disinfector, Fake News Buster, MAWA Man (MAWA stands for Must Always Walk Alone), Circuit Breaker, and Care-leh Dee. We’ll see whether or not that takes off, but it’s definitely not something people will forget easily.
