The nominees for the 2019 Golden Globes were announced overnight, and in addition to the complete lack of female directors nominated for anything, fans are particularly upset about the fact that Paddington 2 wasn’t nominated for anything, not even Best Animated Film.

Despite the fact the movie came out in 2017, it was released too close to the announcement of the nominations to be eligible for the 2018 awards ceremony. As a result, people were hopeful that it would be recognised in the 2019 awards ceremony, but the nominations were announced and… nothing. Not even Best Animated Picture.
Nominated for Best Animated Picture instead were:
“Incredibles 2”
“Isle of Dogs”
“Mirai”
“Ralph Breaks the Internet”
“Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse”
And despite not having seen any of those movies, I know in my bones that Paddington 2 was better than all of them.

It had heart. It had a message. It had a talking bear AND it had Hugh Grant dressed as a nun. What more could the Hollywood Foreign Press Association want? If you prick Paddington, does he not bleed?

Paddington 2 wasn’t just a kid’s movie. It was an incredibly intelligent kid’s movie that people of all ages could enjoy, and, I repeat, it featured Hugh Grant dressed as a nun. I really can’t emphasise that enough.
Just read this quote from Henry Brown, played by Hugh Bonneville:
“As soon as you set eyes on that bear you made up your mind about him. Well Paddington’s not like that. He looks for the good in all of us and somehow, he finds it! It’s why he makes friends wherever he goes. And it’s why Windsor Gardens is a happier place whenever he’s around. He wouldn’t hesitate if any of us needed help!”
That monologue has more heart in it than a mobile organ transplant unit.
The Paddington movies have been used to teach kids about the importance of accepting refugees, and Paddington himself is a UNICEF ambassador who teaches kids about their rights.
It’s not only a good movie, it’s an important one. What have the dogs from Isle of Dogs done for UNICEF lately?
The Hollywood Foreign Press Association made a terrible mistake when they snubbed Paddington 2, and it won’t be forgotten in a hurry.
Paddington fans, myself included, are taking comfort in the fact that nobody really cares about the Golden Globes anyway. It’s not like they’re the British Academy Children’s Awards, which rightfully awarded Paddington 2 ‘Best Feature Film’ late last month.
