According to Variety, following the Kevin Hart saga, the upcoming 90th Academy Awards will be going ahead without a host, making it the first time in 30 years that the show has aired without a host.
In 1989, the Oscars had an announcer, Charlie O’Donnell, and the opening remarks were delivered by the AMPAS (Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences) President, Richard Kahn. There were also two ensemble performances, including performers like Patrick Dempsey, Rob Lowe, Lily Tomlin, and Christian Slater.
After that, celebrities introduced each other as presenters, and presented awards. So basically what we’ve come to expect from awards shows.
And it was fine. It was kind of dull, at least according to one TIME writer, but awards shows that have hosts are often dull, too.
Hosting an awards show in the 2010s basically means trying desperately to recreate that viral moment from the 2014 Oscars when Ellen took a selfie with celebrities and it broke Twitter. But that moment worked because it felt genuine, not forced. Attempts to recreate that ceremony, like the guys delivering flu shots at this week’s Golden Globes, instead of pizza like at the 2014 Oscars, feel rehearsed and uninspired.

So maybe an awards ceremony without a host is what we deserve. Maybe it’s what we need so Hollywood can figure out what exactly it is looking for in a host. Personally, I’m on the side of everyone suggesting the Muppets host the Oscars. Surely they’re available?
Someone on reddit suggested that the Muppets should host the Oscars and it's pretty much the only thing I can think about anymore.
