Black Panther Makes History As The First Superhero Movie To Nab A Best Picture Oscars Nomination

Seven nominations in total for this epic film. Not too shabby.

The Oscar nominations are out so there’s plenty to celebrate and lament as we take it all in.

But one thing we can all be unanimously excited about is this: Black Panther got the Best Picture Oscar Nomination it deserves.

Last year the Academy controversially announced that they were going to create a new ‘Outstanding Achievement In Popular Film’ Oscar category, and the response was dismal.

The Academy ended up postponing the introduction of this new (cop out) category, and hopefully it will stay gone.

‘Popular Film’ was going to become the category for blockbuster hits like Black Panther (and Crazy Rich Asians, which ended up with zero noms), and people believed that the superhero film deserved to be considered for the heralded ‘Best Picture’ award instead.

So to say people are HYPED that Black Panther snagged the nomination is an understatement. This is huge.

Black Panther already made history as the Marvel’s first black-fronted superhero film, and in box office records. Now it’s making history as the first superhero film in the Oscars 90 years to be nominated in the Best Picture category.

The movie is also nominated for Best Costume Design, Best Sound Editing, Best Sound Mixing, Best Original Score, Best Original Song, and Best Production Design, so surely we’ll see Black Panther taking home some gold soon enough.
