We have a lot to thank the Portuguese for, including (but not limited to) inspiring Antonio Cerqueira to create the spicy sensation that is the Bondi burger. The country has a thriving export trade – even the ancient Romans bought wine from them! Portugal also has one of the oldest wine-producing regions in the world, so you can bet they’ve had enough time to hone it to perfection.
Portuguese cities have some of the most beautiful architectural flourishes in Europe. From the medieval castles, to the baroque grandeur of the Joanina library in the university city of Coimbra, the designs are nothing less than inspirational. The visual delight of the country is the azulejo tile, an art form of its own that adorns building exteriors in colourful patterns.
Portugal doesn’t exactly have its own Silicon Valley, but it’s not without its contributions to the tech world. Bet you didn’t know that the first recorded design of an airship was drawn up by a Portuguese inventor? They brought musical inventions across the world too – the history of the ukulele can be traced back to Portuguese explorers.
Spain’s southern neighbour has brought ancient and modern delights to the world, but you don’t have to miss out on their flavours just ’cause you can’t afford a European adventure.
