The Australian accent is a tough one to crack. Ariana Grande’s is pretty decent; various people cast on the latest season of The Good Place, less so.
Now men’s tennis world No. 1 Novak Djokovic – who’s certainly spent enough time here after playing in fifteen Australian Opens and winning six – has had a go.
The main version of our accent that overseas folks tend to have a crack at is the broad-as-the-Nullarbor Crocodile Hunter version, very often when they encounter some intriguing wildlife.
The Serbian champ – who’s not been a crowd favourite this Open – tweeted a video of himself a little chat with a golden orb spider outside his accommodation, going with the classic Steve Irwin opener.
“Check out this bewdy, mayte,” he intones adorably, zooming in on a chonky eight-legged boi in its web.

“Hello, little friend. What a beautiful web. Amazing.”
So encouraging!
“I don’t want to come any closer, I’ll zoom in,” he adds, pulling in on the little fella.
“Thanks for visiting, please don’t come inside. Cheers. Love you.”
He only wants the best for this chubby spidey, even though he fears its little orby body.
So pure. So positive.
With an champion attitude like that, maybe he can power through against Daniil Medvedev tonight – and either way, we can forgive the accent.
Djokovic’s attempt at an Australian accent in the first few seconds of this video was all I needed today ? https://t.co/meGplbXjwZ
