Amy Poehler's Upcoming Movies For Netflix Will Help Both Young Feminists And Wine Mums Alike Feel Seen

There's something for everyone!

Deadline is reporting that Amy Poehler has not one, but two movies in the pipeline at Netflix, and we’re stoked.

The first, which is set to be released in May, is called Wine Country, and will star Poehler as well as many of her longtime collaborators, like Tina Fey, Maya Rudolph, Rachel Dratch, Emily Spivey, Ana Gasteyer, and Paula Pell, as well as PEN15’s Maya Erskine, Wes Anderson’s beloved Jason Schwartzman, and Transparent’s Cherry Jones.

What an amazing lineup of hilarious people. The film sees a bunch of girlfriends heading to Napa to celebrate their friend’s 50th birthday. It sounds like it’ll be the perfect movie to watch with your friends and a couple of bottles of wine.

The second movie is called Moxie, and will be based on the novel of the same name by Jennifer Mathieu (Google helpfully informs me that it was a ‘Zoella Book Club 2017 novel’!)

The book follows Vivian Carter, a sixteen-year-old who’s fed up with her school and the sexism that runs rampant throughout it.

Her mum is described as someone who was a “tough-as-nails, punk rock Riot Grrrl” in the 90s, so Viv takes inspiration from that and creates a feminist zine called Moxie that she distributes at school anonymously.

Her classmates respond to the message, and she befriends other girls “across the divides of cliques and popularity rankings”, and soon realises that she’s basically started a girl revolution.

It sounds right up Poehler’s alley – not just because of the iconic Leslie Knope, but also because of her Amy Poehler’s Smart Girls organisation that works to help young girls with life’s problems in a “funny but informative” way.

Poehler will be directing Moxie, which was adapted for the screen by Tamara Chestna, who’s described by Screen Craft as a 15-year veteran of the film and television industry.

Production won’t begin until later this year (around spring, or fall in the US), but at least we have Wine Country to enjoy until then. And if you haven’t already watched Russian Doll, co-created by Poehler and starring Natasha Lyonne, you should – it’s brilliant.
