There Are So Many Murder Mysteries Set On Yachts It’s A Wonder Why Anybody Gets On A Boat

You're better off staying grounded.

There’s a common horror movie trope where the protagonists stumble across some creepy looking house and decide to explore it for some reason, only to quickly regret their choice. It just makes you wonder, “why even bother exploring that place, you know it’s creepy and you still went!” You can say something similar about movies involving yachts. So much unsavoury things seem to happen on these vessels that you can’t help but think, “murder and shady stuff happens on them, it’s a wonder why anyone even gets on a boat anymore.” Case in point, Murder Mystery, Netflix’s new film that comes out on June 14, features Jennifer Aniston and Adam Sandler going for a long overdue holiday in Europe on a big, beautiful yacht, only to be swept up in a, ahem, murder mystery. The couple just wanted some quality holiday time with great food and picturesque views, not some crazy whodunit involving strangers and a dead billionaire with a sword sticking out of his chest goddamnit. This is far from the first time something like this has happened on a yacht or boat and it’s actually quite baffling how people don’t seem to learn that sea vessels are bad news. You could be sailing around the Pacific, only to stumble upon a crazy man on a damaged boat who decides he wants to murder you for some reason. Or you could be capsized while on a boating trip and stumble upon a mysterious ocean liner that may or may not be occupied by a creepy stalker. There might be the odd occasion when some you somehow find yourself holidaying with a super good-looking stranger on your yacht, only to realise later that they have some shady, ulterior motive. Hell, you and a bunch of strangers might even be roped into some evil whodunit game by someone with a sadistic thrill streak and what was meant to be a relaxing yacht holiday turns into an Agatha Christie-esque battle for survival.

Just not one on a boat or yacht.

The point is, movie yachts seem to be a bastion for a series of unfortunate events and it’s a headscratching wonder why people even other getting on them in the first place. So if you were thinking about going on a yacht holiday like Jennifer and Adam in Murder Mystery, change your plans and just go to Japan or something instead.
