Mindy Kaling And Riz Ahmed Are Making A Heroic Effort To Work On The Ms. Marvel MCU Movie

Who says you can't use Twitter to land you your next screenwriting gig?

Earlier this week, Marvel Studios’ Kevin Feige confirmed Ms. Marvel is “definitely sort of in the works”.

Yep, super vague – but enough to get the internet excited for the first-ever Muslim superhero.

For those of you who don’t know, Ms. Marvel or Kamala Khan, is a shape-shifting, super-strong Pakistani-American teen from New Jersey created in 2013.

She’s based on the original Ms. Marvel, Carol Danvers, who took on the Captain Marvel mantle from the original Captain Marvel because comics have been going for a really, really long time, you guys.

Since the announcement, fans have been trying to work out who the studio will appoint to write and direct this sure-to-be-seminal film.

It didn’t take long before British-Pakistani actor Riz Ahmed joined the conversation, suggesting he and fellow celebrity Mindy Kaling should write the screenplay.

Kick-ass writer and all-round funny woman Kaling was quick to follow up, adding she was “obsessed” with the Ms. Marvel comic, loves Kamala Khan and just wants to support her in any way she can.

In his initial post Ahmed also tagged fellow Pakistani writer, actor and comedian Kumail Nanjiani – who is best known for playing Dinesh in the Emmy Award-nominated HBO series Silicon Valley, but was also nominated for an Oscar for the script he co-wrote with his wife Emily V Gordon, The Big Sick.

Nanjiani didn’t tweet a response but we’re hoping he checks his Twitter soon so the formidable trio can get cracking.

The tweets caught the attention of the women who created Kamala: comics editor Sana Amanat, who is Marvel’s director of content and character development, and G. Willow Wilson, who wrote the comics.

Wilson was clearly overwhelmed with the celebrities’ enthusiasm.

Not wanting to step on any toes, Ahmed quickly pointed out that he and Kaling would hand over the pen to Wilson if the studio actually ended up commissioning them.

Wilson replied saying she would be  “HONORED” to work with Riz and Mindy, adding that superheroes are collaborative efforts.

OK, guys! Thanks for sorting that all out for us via the world’s politest Twitter conversation.

It might’ve started as a light-hearted banter but it’s certainly not beyond the realm of possibility that this could actually materialise into something big.

We hope Feige and his people are paying attention – it would be really great to see Marvel’s new-found diversity extend to the writers’ room (and beyond) on this adaptation.
