Earlier this morning, Ellen Degeneres premiered the trailer for the upcoming Nancy Drew movie, Nancy Drew and the Hidden Staircase, due to be released in US cinemas in March.
And if the replies to her tweet are anything to go by, people are not looking forward to its release at all.
Check out the exclusive #NancyDrew trailer debut right here. I can't wait for this. pic.twitter.com/uktOcWXqgd

The movie stars Sophia Lillis, who was previously in It and Sharp Objects, as Nancy Drew, alongside a cast of relatively new actors, plus Linda Lavin, whom you may recognise as Seth Cohen’s grandmother (or you may not. I don’t want to assume everyone has the memory for peripheral OC characters that I do).
The trailer looks fine. It doesn’t necessarily appeal to me, as an adult who’s never read any Nancy Drew books (I’m sorry, don’t hate me!), but I can see the appeal for younger moviegoers, and Sophia Lillis looks like a good fit for the role.
Evidently, a lot of Nancy Drew fans disagree, and are not looking forward to a modern version of the beloved character from the 1930s.
I loved the books! This looks terrible!

Was there a new Nancy Drew series that came out where Nancy had a totally different personality? Is that what this is based off of?

You shouldn’t have. You REALLY REALLY shouldn’t have.

Quit remaking classic book series. Try originality for once, it might surprise you.

Other people are still looking forward to the new iteration of the classic series, but can’t help but notice differences between the Nancy they know and the one in the film.
Nancy Drew w a skateboard and torn jeans, instead of a baby blue coupe and pumps.
Haha, love it. May just have to go see this.— Kathleen (@katepghfan) January 18, 2019
Regardless of how Nancy has been adapted to interest modern audiences, there’s still a good chance the character can inspire young girls to be inquisitive and intelligent, so we’re here for it.
Looking amazing! As a mom of three young girls this is just what I was hoping would come out to inspire them to be inquisitive, smart girls!
