Let James Dean Rest In Peace, There Are Plenty Of Other Actors Out There

I'm sure he'd absolutely be thrilled with being brought back to life using CGI.

In the pantheon of people who have been taken away from us far too soon, Rebel Without a Cause star James Dean is at the top of the list. The leather jacket-wearing, cigarette-toting cultural icon who couldn’t take a bad photo if he tried died in a 1955 car crash at just 24 years old, but his legend continues to live on.

Well it seems like Hollywood isn’t content with having just James Dean’s legend living on because it’s just gone and “cast” the late star in a new film.

You heard me.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the Rebel Without a Cause star will be brought back to “life” using CGI for the role of Rogan in the upcoming Vietnam action-drama, Finding Jack.

It’s not just a short little cameo (ala Carrie Fisher in Rogue One) either as Dean will be playing a sizeable “secondary lead role”. The plan is to recreate the late actor with CGI using actual footage and photos while someone else provides the voice.

As for why Dean was cast instead of, I don’t know, the many living actors currently working in Hollywood, Finding Jack co-director Anton Ernst explains:

“We searched high and low for the perfect character to portray the role of Rogan, which has some extreme complex character arcs, and after months of research, we decided on James Dean.”

Hoo boy.

James Dean was a once-in-a-lifetime kind of star and replicating him using CGI isn’t just disrespectful, it’s completely pointless. Art isn’t something a computer can just pump out and it’s already been proven that trying to do so will end in nothing but misery (and unintentional hilarity).

Why do you think Rebel Without a Cause hasn’t been remade yet? There was only one James Dean and he’s gone, and no amount of computer trickery can recreate what he brought to the movie screen.

Then there’s the gross commercial aspect of this whole stunt casting saga. I get that Hollywood exists to make money, but shamelessly capitalising on a deceased star’s image like this is pretty unsavoury, even for Hollywood.

This whole thing also takes that god-awful excuse of “oh we simply couldn’t find the right actor/actress for the role” to a new low. I simply refuse to believe there isn’t an actor/actress alive right now who could handle the role of Rogan in Finding Jack.

This whole thing over why resurrecting James Dean using CGI is a terrible idea is perhaps best summed up by none other than Chris Evans:

It’s already weird enough to recreate deceased actors using CGI for roles they previously played (like Peter Cushing in Rogue One…again), let alone generating an entirely new character and performance.

So to those geniuses working on Finding Jack who thought this whole thing was a good idea, please just let James Dean rest in peace and go find another actor. Hollywood isn’t short on talented folk who could easily play the role.

Honestly, the Finding Jack directors should just go cast Scarlet Johannson or something at this point. She’ll be a massive improvement over the plans they have for James Dean.

If Keanu Reeves And Alexandra Grant Aren’t A Couple, Are We All Still Happy For Him?

People are very invested in this. Perhaps too invested.

So Keanu Reeves – aka the internet’s boyfriend – stepped out with a woman, Alexandra Grant, in public for the first time in a long time and the internet went wild.

After going through the initial mourning period upon realising that Keanu is no longer available, folks started championing this unexpected yet lovely coupling, even though no one (other than Keanu and Alexandra) has any clue whether they’re actually together or not

Yes it’s great to see Keanu looking so happy after the many personal tragedies he’s gone through but I just can’t help but feel like everyone’s happiness for him is nothing more than the result of some expectation people have that every Hollywood celebrity has to be married or have a partner or they’re failing in their personal life.

Put it another way, would you still be just as happy for Keanu Reeves if Alexandra Grant wasn’t his partner?

After the strange evolution of Keanu from movie star to one of the internet’s most meme-able celebrities, folks are pretty heavily invested in his life and this latest chapter has got everyone hooked. Hell, people are stoked that he’s (supposedly) dating someone who is age appropriate (he’s 55 and she’s 46) rather than being one of those Hollywood dudes who dates women half his age (*cough* Leonardo DiCaprio *cough*).

But here’s the thing, are we making too much of a fuss over what’s going on?

There’s a very real possibility that Keanu and Alexandra aren’t actually a couple and are merely hanging out as good friends. They’ve known each other for years and have worked together on various arty projects so there’s an established working relationship going on there already. It is possible for men and women to be pals without being together you know.

I guess all I’m saying is maybe we’re reading way too much into this and we should just let Keanu Reeves and Alexandra Grant do whatever it is they’re doing. Let them live their best lives and be happy regardless of whether they’re together or not.

The Loaded Cast For Robert Pattinson's Batman Just Got 200 Percent Sexier

Stupid sexy Penguin. And Catwoman. And Riddler.

Robert Pattinson’s The Batman is shaping up to be quite the star-studded affair based on all the cast confirmations. But it seems like talent isn’t the only thing the filmmakers are looking for as the latest additions to the movie just cranked the thirst factor up several notches.

According to Deadline, the upcoming Caped Crusader flick has managed to nab Colin Farrell to play *checks notes* the Penguin.

Yup, they’re getting this dude…

To play this dude…

Jaysus. How on earth did they go from Danny DeVito to Colin Farrell for The Penguin? Talk about an epic glo-up.

That’s not all either as The Wrap is reporting that Andy Serkis is also in talks to wait on Robert Pattinson hand and foot as Batman’s loyal butler, Alfred Pennyworth.

Okay, your mileage may vary on Andy Serkis but when he’s not under gallons of make-up or millions of dollars of CGI, he’s far from an unattractive dude. He may not be Jeremy Irons but he’s got more than enough charm to make up for it.

Finally, there’s a juicy rumour floating around that The Batman will also feature an appearance for Harvey Dent, who will apparently be played by Matthew McConaughey.

Matthew McConaughey rocking a suit and being super charming before making an epic heel-face-turn (literally) to become Two-Face.

Well alright, alright, alright.

Okay, so to sum up, we have:

  • Robert Pattinson as Batman
  • Zoe Kravitz as Catwoman
  • Paul Dano as The Riddler
  • Jeffrey Wright as James Gordon
  • Colin Farrell as The Penguin
  • Andy Serkis as Alfred Pennyworth
  • Matthew McConaughey as Harvey Dent/Two-Face (maybe)

Holy crap. Gotham’s about to turn into a dangerous thirst trap.

Even if The Batman ends up being slightly disappointing – which is looking more and more unlikely based on all the talent assembled – at least we’ll be getting one of the hottest and most talented casts ever cobbled together for a superhero film.

One thing’s for sure, June 25, 2021 can’t come soon enough.
