Dan Aykroyd Confirms The Original Cast Will Return To 'Ghostbusters 2020'

"It’s gonna be scary."

Ghostbusters star Dan Aykroyd has officially confirmed the original cast will return for the third film that fans have been begging for since 1989 when Ghostbusters II was released.

When Ghostbusters 2020 was first announced, it was believed the film wouldn’t have anything to do with the original Ghostbusters and would pass the torch onto a new generation of supernatural exterminators – this time teenagers.

However, Aykroyd has confirmed in a new interview with The Greg Hill Show, that while the latest film in the franchise doesn’t focus on the original cast, they will be returning.

Aykroyd said, “Jason Reitman wrote a beautiful, heartfelt script that takes the real DNA from the first two movies and transfers that directly to the third, the next generation. It hands the legacy off to a new generation of stars, and players, and actors, and characters.

“And we’ve shot our part, so [Bill] Murray, Sigourney [Weaver] and Annie Potts, and it was really exciting working on this new idea a new take on the story which Jason — who’s a really incredible and fine filmmaker — came up with. So I’m pretty excited.”

He added, “I have really good feelings about his, just because of the quality of the stars we’ve got there. We’ve got some really terrific young actors, a great story, a great setting. It’s gonna be scary, really thought-provoking, it’s gonna be very heart-felt.”

The confirmation comes after rumours Aykroyd, Ernie Hudson, Sigourney Weaver, Annie Potts and Bill Murray would be returning, but now we know they’ve actually shot their parts it makes it official.

Aykroyd, Murry, Hudson, Weaver and Potts previously returned for cameos in Paul Feig’s 2016 reboot of the film, but not as Ghostbusters.

No doubt fans will be very keen to see the actors as the familiar characters one more time.

According to ComicBook.Com, Reitman, who is the son of original director Ivan Reitman, shared these comments about his father while at the Ghostbusters Fan Fest, “You’re the greatest storyteller I know, and I’m the luckiest son on Earth.

“I feel so intimidated making this film, but I’m making it for all of you guys. But most of all, I’m making it for you, and I love you.”

Ghostbusters 2020 also stars Paul Rudd, Finn Wolfhard and McKenna Grace.
