It’s official: CATS the musical is coming to the silver screen with a star-studded cast who REALLY love cats, and something called “digital fur technology.”
Today, a teaser trailer for the upcoming film was released and there’s quite a bit to unpack. The clip features stars of the film, including Taylor Swift, Jason Derulo, Idris Elba, James Corden, Ian McKellan, Judi Dench, Rebel Wilson and Jennifer Hudson talking about felines with an intensity that feels, well, a little excessive.
Between extremely dramatic music and shots of Taylor Swift’s equally-as-intense theatrical dancing, the actors speak about their backgrounds and experience with the film. We even get to here about Judi Dench thinking it was “all over” when she snapped her Achilles’ tendon on the 1981 production of the musical.
The wildest part of the teaser is when we find out that the set has been supersized so it will be seen from a “cat’s perspective,” and director Tom Hooper mentions the concept of “digital fur technology, to create the most perfect covering of fur.”
James Corden says, “These are people, but they’re cats, and it’s kind of blowing my mind. There is nothing else like it.” Idris Elba adds, “This is a moment for you to step into a world that’s completely designed to entertain.” We’re still talking about a tribe of mythical cats, right?
It ends with Taylor giving us her best ‘rawr’ and wow, I need a strong drink. I have never wanted to see Idris Elba dancing in a perfect covering of digital fur more in my life. The official trailer for the film drops this Friday. Strap yourselves in, feline fans.
