It’s been a big day for… Listening to...

Oh Miley, Surely You Know People Don’t “Choose” To Be Gay

"People aren't queer because you chose to give up on men."

If you’ve been following Miley Cyrus on social media you’d be well aware that she firmly on the rebound following her split from ex-husband Liam Hemsworth. It’s been somewhat refreshing to see Cyrus embracing her newfound freedom and giving zero hoots about the public’s opinion of her new relationship with Aussie singer, Cody Simpson.

However, the singer threw a spanner in the works today when she went live on Instagram and made a series of homophobic comments.

Speaking to Cody (and the rest of her 100M followers) in a dual screen video, Cyrus said “there are good men out there guys, don’t give up. You don’t have to be gay. There are good people with dicks out there, you just gotta find them. You gotta find a dick that’s not a dick, you know what I mean?”

Yikes.

But it didn’t end there. Cyrus continued, “I always thought I had to be gay because I just thought all guys were evil, but it’s not true.”

“There are good people out there that just happen to have dicks. I’ve only ever met one and he’s on this live,” she added, referring to Simpson.

It wasn’t long before Miley’s fans and followers took to various social media platforms to call her out on her comments. One Twitter user wrote, “Don’t use the queer community as a stop-gap because you couldn’t find a boyfriend. People aren’t queer because they “gave up” on men. This is so insulting.”

Later, Cyrus took to her Instagram stories in an attempt to clear up her comments. “I was talking shit about sucky guys, but let me be clear, YOU don’t CHOOSE your sexuality. You are born as you are. It has always been my priority to proect the LGBTQ community I am a part of. Happy Monday!”

While it’s a relief to see that Cyrus does, in fact, understand that homosexuality isn’t a choice, it’s pretty difficult to understand how she can say “you don’t have to be gay” and talk about being “part of the LGBTQ community” in one breath. Cyrus’ comments come across as homophobic, and ignorant to how they might make people in the LGBTQ community feel – not to mention her ex-girlfriends and female partners.

It’s quite clear that Miley Cyrus is going through a lot of change in her personal life right now, but that doesn’t make it okay to throw comments around about being gay like it’s a choice – especially when there’s a captive audience of 100M followers listening to you.

You’re better than that, Miley.
