Harry Styles, Lady Gaga And Serena Williams Are Co-Chairing Next Year's Met Gala And It's Going To Be 'Unnaturally' Camp

The theme for the 2019 gala will be 'Camp: Notes on Fashion' and what could possibly be better/tackier than this?

It’s been announced that Harry Styles, Lady Gaga and Serena Williams will serve as co-chairs for the 2019 Met Gala, which will have the theme ‘Camp: Notes on Fashion’.

Gucci will be sponsoring the event and the exhibit it celebrates, which will run at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York from May to September next year.

Chairing the event essentially means acting as hosts alongside Vogue’s Anna Wintour and Gucci’s creative director, Alessandro Michele.

The theme draws its inspiration from Susan Sontag’s 1964 essay ‘Notes on Camp‘, in which Sontag described Camp as “the love of the unnatural: of artifice and exaggeration…style at the expense of content…the triumph of the epicene style”.

Many of the Italian fashion houses have been known for their love of camp (or tackiness, depending on your point of view), and Gucci under Alessandro Michele’s direction is no exception. Think ornate suits, clashing patterns and colours, and lots of texture.

Since leaving One Direction, Harry Styles has come to be known for his beautiful suits, many of which are Gucci, and many of which are indeed quite camp.

The choice of Lady Gaga needs no explanation – the woman oozes camp from every pore, when she isn’t dressed down for A Star Is Born, that is.

Serena Williams is an interesting choice – she doesn’t immediately come to mind when you think of ‘camp’, but she’s one of the most talked about celebrities of the year, and she’s repeatedly successfully grabbed people’s attention during previous Met Galas with her long gowns.

While this year’s Met Gala theme saw celebrities turn out Renaissance-inspired looks, I’m excited to see everyone throw caution to the wind next year in celebration of all things camp.
