Lizzie Caplan Reckons Janis Ian Was One Of The Mean Girls And I Want My Pink Shirt Back

"But she was way craftier than the other mean girls."

It’s somehow been 15 years since Mean Girls was first released and changed our lives for the better, but now Lizzy Caplan, is saying her character Janis Ian was actually one of the mean girls and now I’m questioning everything.

The bombshell was dropped on Buzzfeed News’ AM to DM, when Caplan was asked whether she agreed with a viral 2017 Twitter thread that joked that Janis was the real villain of the movie.

While Caplan had no idea the Twitter thread existed, she did agree that her character was “layered”.

“Yeah, of course! But she was way craftier than the other mean girls. She was like a mean girl with spy plans — with purpose,” she joked.

In the movie, Janis turns Cady Heron (Lindsay Lohan) against the ‘Plastics’ straight away and soon devises a plan to take down Regina George (Rachel McAdams). When you put it that way (and read the Twitter thread) it’s pretty difficult to stop seeing her as the film’s real villain!

I’m now so confused it took me 15 years to see the truth…

Caplan was also asked how she’d feel about a sequel to the much-loved film and she said it was hard to imagine what that story would be.

“I don’t know what that [sequel] looks like! Mean girls in the world? Mean moms? Ugh!”

She added that if she saw a really great script from Tina Fey she’d consider it, “Listen, if everybody was on board, if the script was anywhere near as good as the original one was, then I don’t see how I could say no to that, but I’m not really waiting by the phone for the Mean Girls reboot.”

Lacey Chabert, who played Gretchen Wieners in the movie, also stopped by Buzzfeed News and revealed she thinks the movie works because everyone in it is flawed in some way, “The reason it works so well is that it is a really good message at the end of the movie, about building each other up and being there for each other and not feeling like we’re all in competition together.”

She added, “I’m proud to have been a part of the movie.”
