It’s been a big day for… Listening to...

There's An All-Women Spider-Verse Movie On The Way, So We Might Actually Get Justice For Gwen Stacy

Whatever a Spider-Man can do, a Spider-Woman can do backwards in four pairs of heels.

The latest of in Sony’s Spider-Man-adjacent projects, the animated multi-continuity standalone Into The Spider-Verse, isn’t even out yet; Venom is kicking on a surprisingly successful box office run; and we’re still many months out from Spider-Man: Far From Home, the next Tom Holland MCU film.

But mark your calendars for some unknown point in the near future, because the most necessary all-female franchise spinoff of all time is coming: the women of the Spider-Verse are getting their own movie.

The Hollywood Reporter, uh, reports that as well as an Into The Spider-Verse sequel, Sony is in talks to develop an untitled movie featuring the women of the Spider-Verse.

They might not have had any MCU love yet, but there’s Spider-Woman (AKA Jessica Drew), the fan favourite also-Spider-Woman Spider-Gwen (yes, that’s Gwen Stacy, from an alternate universe where she was bitten by the radioactive spider instead of Peter Parker), Silk, the cosmic overseer Madame Web, and of course, the perpetually sidelined Mary Jane Watson. Just kidding, MJ never gets ANYTHING to do.

Non-comics-readers will meet Spider-Gwen in Into The Spider-Verse next month, as voiced by Hailee Steinfeld.

The writer tapped for the script is Aussie Bek Smith, who’s worked on TV shows like Zoo and Still Star-Crossed, as well as on Wrath Of The Titans, while Voltron co-showrunner Lauren Montgomery will direct.

It’s telling that Gwen, who’s been starring in an acclaimed comics series of her own for nearly three years, is the first female Spider-Being to make it to the big screen – maybe it’s a clue that Sony sees her as the anchor for the lady-Spidey spinoff.

Maybe if we’re really lucky, we can get a retcon of the end of Amazing Spider-Man. Emma Stone deserved better.
