Marvel has been slaying the movie business over the past decade, but its TV offerings have been a bit hit and miss at best. For every good to great Marvel TV series we’ve received, like season one of Daredevil, Jessica Jones, and Luke Cage, there’s… basically everything else.
But it appears that the comic book behemoth is taking some ambitious steps to fix this little weak spot in its library of content because Marvel are reportedly developing a number of limited series centred on several popular characters from its “Marvel Cinematic Universe”.
I’ll let Loki take the reins here on my reaction to this news.
According to Variety, Marvel’s plan is to develop six to eight episode limited-run shows revolving around fan favourite heroes who are popular but not quite popular enough to receive their own standalone series or origin movie, such as Loki and Scarlet Witch.
However, this project will differ from what we’ve seen so far on free-to-air TV and Netflix.
It is reported that these in-development shows will be broadcast on Disney’s upcoming streaming service and is expected to be an expensive endeavour an par with the amount of dosh spent on Marvel’s movies.
But perhaps most interestingly, all the actors who portrayed the heroes and villains are expected to reprise their roles in these upcoming shows, which means we can expect heavy doses of Tom Hiddleston being owned time and time again, and Elizabeth Olsen doing her weird hand stuff as her Eastern European accent steadily slips.
Of course there’s the whole apocalyptic Infinity War ending in which many heroes faded into oblivion to take into account, but I’m sure Marvel have a get-out-of-jail card for each of their characters. Plus, I’m sure they’re all going to be revived somehow in next year’s Avengers movie.
Marvel and Disney had no comment to Variety‘s report, which means we shouldn’t get too excited just yet.
Apparently these new shows are still in the very early stages of development in terms of writers, storylines being mapped out, and even which second-tier Marvel Cinematic Universe heroes are getting the which means it will be a while before we see of have confirmation on anything.
As exciting as this all sounds, the only “new” Marvel TV series I want to see is a new show revolving around Peggy Carter. It’s been a few years since Agent Carter was sadly canceled and I’m still sore over that decision.
With Marvel and Disney throwing some serious moolah behind this ambitious limited series project, to the point where they’re paying the big bucks for movie stars, I hope Peggy Carter gets a second go-around in the spotlight.
