It's No Surprise This Rapper Is Copping Backlash For His Mac Miller Tribute

"Disrespectful, narcissistic, jealous, grossly unnecessary."

It’s been just over one year since 26-year-old rapper Mac Miller died from an accidental drug overdose. When news of his sudden death broke in September of 2018, Miller’s famous friends, family and fans flooded social media with heartbreaking tributes to the late rapper.

Fast-forward to this week and another one of Miller’s friends has shared his thoughts on the rapper’s death, but was met with immediate online backlash.

GoldLink AKA D’Anthony Carlos took to Instagram yesterday to write an open letter to Miller, addressing their complicated relationship.

“…I think what made you and I special is that we weren’t always on the best terms. So I didn’t always have great things to say about you,” he wrote.

“I always thought you drove yourself insane yourself about your own music. So much that, you would adopt styles as homage to those around you that you loved. That’s where our problem started.”

GoldLink went on to say that Miller’s album The Divine Feminine was an “actual blueprint” of his album And After That We Didn’t Talk.

“When I tried to contact you, about anything at all…you never hit me,” he wrote. “Afterwards, we seen each other at Coachella, and you put your head down like an innocent child, but I told you to pick it up and I hugged you like the brother you are to me.”

GoldLink ended his tribute to Miller by saying how “proud” and “grateful” he was of the rapper for giving him a platform,” but it was too late and it had already ruffled feathers.

Miller’s fans and friends were quick to clapback at GoldLink’s post, calling it “narcissistic,” “jealous” and “unnecessary.”

Artist Anderson .Paak, who featured on Miller’s track ‘Dang,’ responded to GoldLink’s letter with a lengthy comment of his own. “@goldlink I would imagine yo weird ass posted up somewhere just like this when you decided to make that disrespectful, narcissistic, jealous, grossly unnecessary post.”

“You ain’t the first to make an album inspired by a relationship, you ain’t the first to make a song featuring Anderson .Paak but you are the first to disrespect my friend who is no longer here for absolutely no reason and I can’t stand for that.”

Then, Anderson said what we’re all thinking: “Whatever issues you had with Mac should have been addressed in person and ended there,” he wrote. “What’s the point of bringing this up after his passing and disrespecting his name?”

Miller’s Twitter fans mimicked Anderson’s Tweet and one even made the claim, “Goldlink might’ve just CREATED the Memorial Post Triple Crown. He simultaneously gave props to Mac Miller, spoke ill of him AND bragged about himself being the bigger person. That’s otherworldly talent.”

Yikes. Trying to call someone out over a year after their tragic death does feel truly unnecessary and somewhat self-righteous. Since going live with his tribute to Mac Miller, GoldLink has disabled the comments on his post – surely this is a sign that you’ve gone too far?
