You may remember back in September, when Lizzo’s take out was allegedly stolen. She tweeted out “Hey @Postmates this girl Tiffany W. stole my food she lucky I don’t fight no more,” as well as a photo of Tiffany. Welp, that tweet is getting Lizzo sued.
The tweet was pretty quickly deleted, and an apology sent out, but as everyone except Lizzo knows apparently, the screenshots are forever.
For Tiffany Wells, being put on blast to all of Lizzo’s followers was, understandably, horrible. She said that she was scared to go to work or leave the house at all, in case somebody tried to hurt her. She’s sued Lizzo as a way of moving forward after a terrifying time.
Lawsuit documents show that she’s suing for libel, intentional infliction of emotional distress, and false light invasion of privacy. Tiffany’s defence says that Lizzo “knew or should have known that her false and defamatory statements would be republished over and over by third-parties.”
It also says that “Lizzo lacked reasonable grounds for any belief in the truth of her statements and acted negligently in failing to determine the true facts,” which is lawyer speak for “she lied”. They also say she “acted with actual malice and reckless disregard for the truth when she tweeted the false statements.”
Tiffany Wells says that she took the food to a Boston hotel, but it didn’t have a room number on it, and nobody answered the phone when she rang. Tiffany says she even tried the hotel concierge, but they didn’t know who had ordered it either.
After 10 mins of trying to contact Lizzo, Tiffany left to her next order. Postmates company policy says she only needed to wait 5.
We’ve learned a lot of things from Lizzo, including how to feel more confident that we ever have before, and that the flute is undeniably cool. The latest lesson we should probably learn is to think before you tweet, because being sued doesn’t sound fun.
