Let's Get Around This Young Woman Who Rejected Her Job Rejection And Landed An Interview

When all else fails…

Getting a job is no easy feat. It involves seconds on minutes on hours of effort and emotional investment for (almost always) zero return.

Think about it. We have to search for a suitable job, rewrite our résumé and cover letter, spend hours refreshing our email or checking our call log to see if our application was successful, and spend more time following up on said application when we don’t hear back.

Then there’s the nerves.

Then there’s the disappointment when we realise that all of our efforts were for nothing because we didn’t even get an interview.

The struggle is so real – I have PTSD just thinking about it.

But you know what they say about quitting: you don’t. Or, in the case of one NSW woman, just don’t take no for an answer.

Introducing my new hero: Jessica Irving.

Jessica applied for a retail assistant job at her local Aldi and was rejected for the role. Determined to land the role, Jessica rejected their rejection.

“I pride myself on my impressive sale skills and can describe myself to be very persuasive and show effectiveness,” the 18-year-old (read: legend) wrote.

“So persuasive in fact, that I would like to confidentially reject your rejection. Thank you for letting me be a part of the team, I won’t let you down. See you on Monday for my 9-5 shift.”

Like I said, legend.

My favourite part is the smiley face at the very end that says “thanks but no thanks”- who knew a colon and a bracket could say so much.

Jessica’s email is great for so many reasons: she backs herself, she’s polite, she’s confident and she stands out – there’s nothing a recruiter likes more than someone who can stand out from the pile of cut-and-paste cover letters and “to whom is may concern”s on their desk.

But that’s not the best bit – the best bit is that Aldi replied INVITING HER TO A GROUP INTERVIEW.

So there you have it folks: the secret to cracking our unemployment struggles. The next time you find yourself refreshing your inbox, think WWJD?: What Would Jessica Do?

Jessica would’t take no for an answer, and neither should you.

Jessica is set to attend a group interview with Aldi on Saturday. TBC if she gets the job.
