For some of us, calling in sick induces a special kind of guilt. Seriously, there are even people out there who are full-on ill but feel too guilty to take time off. We’re looking at you, co-worker with the never-ending sniffles.
It’s about time we stop perpetuating this ridiculous, always-on, workaholic culture.
Our friends at Koala are with us. They know that sometimes you just need a day spent in bed. So they have officially sponsored the sickie.
But before you decide to take a “me” day. Ask yourself: Am I ready for this?
Because there is nothing more disappointing than getting pumped-up for the best day-off ever, only to wind up eating twisties for brekkie and spending the whole day doing chores in your pjs.
Here’s a step-by-step guide to making the most of your “me” day (for those of us who seriously suck at relaxing):
Step 1: Have The Best Brekkie Ever
Picture this: It’s the day after you’ve told work you’re not coming in. Your alarm never goes off. You wake up naturally. But today you are not rushing out of the house with a banana in hand. Today you’ve organised the best brekkie ever.
For some that means going to their favourite cafe, for others it means a fresh loaf of crusty bread, or an endless supply of haloumi. Plan your brekkie and make it special.
Step 2: Get Clean
Don’t get me wrong. Staying in bed in the same jammies for a whole day is great but if you want to ramp up the experience then get up, have a shower and for an extra splash of luxury put some fresh sheets on your bed.
Hoping into a freshly made bed is like a hug from your mum and a definite to make your day in bed a special one.
Step 3: Get On Top Of Life Admin
Controversial, I know, but allocating a bit of time to neglected tasks will benefit your mental health in the long run. This is not the day to do a deep-clean of your entire house or tick everything off of your to-do list. Stick to tackling 2-3 tasks that you’ve been procrastinating for yonks.
Step 4: Do Something For Yourself
This isn’t just about buying something nice, it’s about doing something that either brings you joy or soothes you. Try meditating for 10 minutes, meet-up with that friend who makes you laugh, spend time on a hobby. Engage with the person you are outside of work or study.
Step 5: Get Your Netflix On
Phones off. You heard me. Immersing yourself in a film can be a great way to temporarily escape from life’s stresses. But if you’re re-watching ‘Friends’ for the 100th time and you’re spending more time scrolling through your phone it’s time to move on. Find a new series to get into, or for less commitment, go for a film.
So ditch the guilt and spend a day in bed, revelling the delight of your mattress.
And if you’re after a new mattress to really make the most out of your ‘me’ day head to Koala and get yourself Australia’s highest-rated mattresses. They’ll even be able to sort you out with 4-hour delivery! In case you call in a spontaneous sickie.
Now you’re super set for your next “sickie.”
