From Kanye To Folau, Who’s Buying These Self-Indulgent Sermons?

Seriously.

Israel Folau has made headlines today after spewing a hurtful rant about the Australian bushfires over the weekend.

The former footballer, who lost his gig with Rugby Australia after making homophobic comments, spoke in a live video shared by The Truth of Jesus Christ Church, Sydney and said the fires were a punishment from God.

As News.com.au shares, Folau read a passage from the bible before linking its words to the tragedy that has claimed the lives of six people.

He continued, stating that he believes the fires are in response to Australia’s laws on same-sex marriage and abortion.

“Look how rapid these bushfires these droughts, all these things have come in a short period of time. Do you think it’s a coincidence or not?” He is heard telling an audience.

“God is speaking to you guys. Australia you need to repent and take these laws and turn it back to what is right.”

The comments have, unsurprisingly, roused a passionate response. A lot of Australians are offended and hurt by Folau’s misguided words.

But despite the outrage, this man is still being given a platform. Begging the question: who’s watching this and nodding along?

Similarly, we’ve got Kanye West running Sunday services and using them to give himself a pat on the back. Over the weekend he ran a service in Houston and told audiences:

“Jesus has won the victory. I told you about my arrogance and cockiness already. Now the greatest artist that God has ever created is now working for him.”

Kanye too, who’s recent comments about slavery deeply offended many people, continues to win a large audience. He has apologised for his words, but he’s not a stranger to a controversial statement, that’s for sure.

Yes, people are entitled to their beliefs (within reason) but surely there are more positive messages to be sending.
