Failing Your HSC Isn't The End Of The World By Any Means

If you're worried about failing your HSC, or your marks weren't all that, then stress not.

Failing HSC exams is a big deal because your mark goes towards your ATAR rank. For those who want to get into a top university, you’re going to need a high HSC grade. But, don’t fear because failing HSC assessments isn’t the end of the world. Whether it’s your hard work or the help of your school, there are ways to rectify the situation.

So, take a deep breath and relax. All you need to do read on and learn about the steps at your disposal. Go on; you can thank us later.

Education Standards Authority

Before you get to the HSC stage, the NESA might be able to tell you if you are on course to score an ‘N.’ ‘N’ means fail, and it will prevent you from enrolling in any HSC course. Thankfully, you’ll receive a letter warning you about your grades from NESA. Your principal can also contact them if he or she thinks you won’t hit the mandatory curriculum requirements.

Results Check Service

If you feel as if your HSC mark isn’t a true reflection of your abilities, you can use the HSC Results Check service for a small fee. The service looks into the marker’s intention to make sure it’s been recorded accurately. Also, it focuses on any non-attempts by students (failure to answer questions), as well as digitally marked responses. Incorrect answer combinations are also taken into account.

How Can You Tell If Your HSC Grade Is Unfair?

There are two options:

Raw Mark Report: This is when you ask for all the raw marks pertaining to the subjects you’ve failed. You can also request them for the ones you’ve passed to try and gauge how the exams are graded. It’s important to know that this isn’t a remark, so your score won’t change. However, it should point out any patterns or anomalies that you want examining by the Results Check service.

Examination Responses Service: Aside from your raw marks, you can ask for a copy of your answers regarding any failing HSC course. Similar to raw marks, it gives you an insight into how your exams were graded and if there are issues. After consultation with your teachers, you can escalate the matter further. Results check is included if one hasn’t already been ordered.

Other Organisations That Can Help If You Fail Your HSC

NESA isn’t the only body that offers help and advice. The Career Advisory Service provides free and up to date information on the next steps. Aside from your career, it also gives you impartial advice on what to do educationally. The Universities Admissions Centre is also a good organisation to speak to as they use your HSC score to decide if they accept you onto a course.

“Resits” If You Fail Your HSC

If you don’t hit the percentiles to pass your HSC subjects – 50 and above – there are resits. The good thing is you can pick and choose your failing HSC courses and top-up that way.

The main thing to remember is that you do have options and you shouldn’t stress!
