At some point in your childhood, you told your last horror story, watched your last “scary” movie without permission and attended your last sleepover featuring a torchlight and fort. And I think it’s time we bring those days back.
It’s Friday the 13th which means it’s the perfect time to hop-on the group chat and organise an old-school, horror movie binge. Lucky for you, we’ve piled together a list of the classics.
But to kick things off, you’ll need to prep.
First, find someone to host – preferably a mate who subscribes to a streaming platform like Stan. Secondly, execute a classic junk food run (bonus points if you do this in your PJs). We’re talking chips, choccie and some sort of throwback treat like Gobstoppers, Zappos or Warheads.
Lastly, you’ll need a setlist of films. Here’s a list of horror’s best:
Child’s Play
There is absolutely nothing in this world more terrifying than a possessed doll. In Child’s Play murderer Charles Lee Ray uses black magic to transfer his soul into a doll named Chucky. A woman buys it for her son resulting in a whole bunch of terrifying chaos.
Evil Dead
Honestly, nothing is more classic than a cabin in the woods horror film and Evil Dead covers all the bases. The film features a group of friends who find a book inside of a cabin and reawaken the dead. Watch between fingers as they fight for their lives to avoid becoming ‘possessed’ by the evil spirits.
Scream
What a freakin’ hit. Scream is an icon of the slasher-horror genre. The story is set in a peaceful, small town in California where a masked killer has rocked up and decided to cause havoc. Scream is packed with suspense and a whole lot of gore. The perfect combo.
Carrie
The OG 1976 Carrie film is praised as one of the best adaptations of Stephen King’s novels. The movie follows withdrawn and sensitive teen girl, Carrie who discovers she has telekinetic power after being humiliated by her classmates.
Wolf Creek
Wolf Creek is less old school (it was released in 2005) but it’s no less of a classic. The best part of the film is the fact that it’s set in Australia and it’s based on the true story of convicted serial killer Ivan Milat. Three road-tripping friends find themselves stuck in the bush when their car won’t start. The lesson: don’t trust every ‘kind’ stranger you meet.
The Amityville Horror
Ah, the classic, “we moved into a new house but it’s actually possessed” tale. This one is sure to conjure up memories of that “scary” home you knew about in your childhood. It’s bloody, it’s gory and it involves an exorcism. The movie follows a couple who soon learn that they purchased the former site of a mass-killing which in itself, is horrific, but rest assured – it gets worse.
Beware, these flicks ain’t for the fainthearted.
