All The Most Epic Moments In Grammy History That You Might Have Forgotten About

The general rule is, expect the unexpected.

From strange outfits, powerful speeches and surprising collaborations, anything can happen on music’s ‘night of nights’.

The 61st Annual Grammy Awards are upon us, so we’ve collected 15 of the best Grammy moments that you probably forgot happened.

Enjoy the throwbacks!

#1. Lady Gaga arrives in a giant egg

In 2011, Lady Gaga made a strong impression on the red carpet when she arrived in an egg-shaped pod, or ‘vessel’ as she called it, and then opened the show with her new song ‘Born This Way’. She later revealed that she was in the pod for around 72 hours to “prepare and really think about the meaning of the song”.

We expected her to be birthed once again this year to promote A Star is Born, but not eggs spotted yet.

#2. Elton John teams up with Eminem

While many people were claiming the rapper to be homophobic and misogynistic through his album The Marshall Mathers LP, Eminem made a strong statement at the 2001 Grammy Awards by performing his song ‘Stan’ with Elton John.

There have been many unexpected performances at the award ceremony, but perhaps this one was the most shocking.

#3. Taylor Swift shades Kanye West in her acceptance speech

In 2016, Kanye’s song ‘Famous’ sparked controversy with his lyrics about Taylor Swift – “I made that bitch famous” – so while accepting the award for Album of the Year that same year, she took her opportunity to subtly take a dig at him.

“There are going to be people along the way who will try to undercut your success or take credit for your accomplishments or your fame…”

You go, girl.

#4. Dozens of same-sex marriages are officiated

33 couples, both gay and straight, got married live on air at the 2014 Grammy Awards while promoting marriage equality. Queen Latifah officiated the ceremony while Macklemore, Ryan Lewis and Mary Lambert performed their song ‘Same Love’ alongside Madonna.

This iconic moment definitely goes down in history.

#5. Rihanna’s bedazzled flask

In 2017, Rihanna was nominated for eight Grammy awards and shockingly didn’t win any of them. However, social media couldn’t stop talking about her when they saw her bedazzled flask.

Hey, the award show went for three-and-a-half hours, so we don’t blame her.

#6. Adele breaks her award for Beyoncé

2017 was a huge year for Adele when she won all of the major categories – Song of the Year, Record of the Year and Album of the Year. However, when she was giving her speech for the latter, she put the focus on Beyoncé saying she should’ve won instead.

“All us artists here, we fucking adore you. You are our light,” she said, before breaking the Grammy to share with Beyonce.

#7. Kesha’s emotional performance

At the 2018 Grammy Awards, Kesha performed her song ‘Praying’ alongside Camila Cabello, Julia Michaels, Bebe Rexha, Andra Day and Cyndi Lauper.

In what was the most powerful performance of the night, all of the women on stage wore white in recognition of the #MeToo movement.

#8. Cee-Lo Green with Gwyneth Paltrow and the Muppets

Everyone was a little bit confused when Cee-Lo Green performed alongside the Muppets for his song ‘Forget You’ in 2011, and then Gwyneth Paltrow showed up to sing the chorus. It’s important to note that she sang the song on Glee a year earlier, if that makes a difference.

Between the odd collaboration and the extreme outfit choices, could this be the most WTF performance the Grammys has ever seen?

#9. Pharrell’s hat

The most-talked about fashion accessory at the 2014 Grammy Awards was definitely Pharrell’s hat, which quickly sparked a number of memes online.

Eight months after its red carpet appearance, it was put on display at the Newseum in Washington, D.C. as an exhibit of pop culture history.

#10. Kanye almost interrupts another acceptance speech

Six years after he famously crashed Taylor Swift’s acceptance speech at the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards, Kanye almost did it again to Beck at the 2015 Grammy’s before stopping himself.

It should be noted that both times he was ‘standing up’ for Beyoncé, so that’s kind of nice.

#11. Adele’s performance has audio problems

At the 2016 Grammy Awards, Adele stuck it out during her performance of ‘All I Ask’ despite audio issues. It was the singer’s first time on the stage since 2012, and the Grammy producers made it clear after the show that it was an issue on their behalf.

Adele later took to Twitter to simply say, “shit happens”.

#12. Milli Vanilli are stripped of their Best New Artist award

After winning the award for Best New Artist at the 32nd Annual Grammy Awards, it was revealed that the two men making up the German R&B duo Milli Vanilli didn’t actually sing any of the vocals on their album.

It was the first time that a Grammy Award was revoked.

#13. J-Lo’s dress

Now perhaps one of the most iconic red-carpet looks in pop culture history, Jennifer Lopez’ green Versace dress at the 2000 Grammys shocked the world, and was cited by the president of Google as a motivation for the creation of Google image search. It even has its own Wikipedia page.

While a copy of the gown is displayed at The Grammy Museum, J-Lo still owns the original dress.

#14. Taylor Swift and Miley Cyrus’ duet

In 2009, the same year that the pair appeared in Hannah Montana: The Movie, Miley joined Taylor on stage at the Grammys to perform her song ‘Fifteen’.

The pair haven’t hung out in a while, so this was probably the first and last time that the two of them will sing together.

#15. Nicki Minaj’s exorcism

Perhaps one of the strangest performances in Grammy history, the then-Best New Artist nominee caused controversy when she performed a faux exorcism in 2012. Oh, and she also showed up on the red carpet with a man dressed up as the Pope, so you can imagine why the Catholic League (an American Catholic anti-defamation organisation) was mad.

Nicki’s latest album Queen was snubbed from any Grammy nominations this year, so she is on our list of celebrities we predict will skip the award ceremony.
