The Golden Globes Failing To Improve On Last Year’s All Male Director Nominees Is Disheartening

It will happen, just...not this year.

Remember earlier this year at The Golden Globes award show, when the #MeToo movement was kicking off and there was a heightened awareness of gender inequality in Hollywood?

Remember when certified legend Natalie Portman did this when introducing the nominees for the ‘Best Director’ category?

Well The Golden Globes has just released the full list of nominees for the 76th awards show, and while there are a lot of amazing, worthy people on the line up, unfortunately this will be another year with all male nominees in the category of ‘Best Director’.

Nominated for best director we have Bradley Cooper for A Star Is Born, Alfonso Cuaron for Roma, Peter Farrelly for Green Book, Spike Lee for BlacKkKlansman and Adam McKay for Vice. All did incredible work, but obviously the serial absence of women in the category highlights a glaring problem with the industry.

Though of these nominees, Spike Lee deserves special commendation in my opinion for his look at race and racism in BlacKkKlansman. An epic and important film. Plus, it’s no secret that Hollywood awards shows (and Hollywood in general) are not just dealing with gender inequality, they are also famously whitewashed.

The only woman to ever win the GG’s best director title remains to be Barbara Streisand, when she was the first female to be nominated and won in 1984 for Yentl. Streisand was nominated again in 1992 for The Prince of Tides, and only four other women have been been nominated in the category besides her.

While it’s super disappointing to see another year lack the female representation we deserve, if we keep pushing then things will have to change. Then hopefully not too long from now, we won’t have to have this discussion at all.
