Why Ryan Murphy's 'Hollywood' Is A Perfect Re-Write Of The Golden Era

Hand him all the awards.

There’s something incredibly special about Ryan Murphy’s Hollywood. With Glee, Scream Queens and American Horror Story under his belt, Ryan Murphy has already solidified himself as one of the worlds greatest auteurs, but his new mini-series feels different – and different in a good way.

We spoke about ‘Hollywood’ on this episode of It’s Been A Big Day For…

Hollywood, is Ryan Murphy’s latest mini-series which follows a group of women, LGBTQIA+ people, people of colour and allies as they break through a conservative Hollywood industry in the 1940s. And while revisionist entertainment seems to be the craze recently, this show feels more powerful than its predecessors.

We should start by addressing that now, more than ever, we need heart-warming content. Given the COVID-19 pandemic, a lot of us have been feeling quite anxious, nostalgic and overall just craving feel-good entertainment. Hollywood does this in the best way possible

Not only does Hollywood give us Golden Age nostalgia, but it also does so with a progressive lens. The characters in this series are all subject to happy endings which is extremely satisfying to see in a period piece. Furthermore, given representation for queer people in Hollywood is still something lacking in this very day, to see an interracial, queer couple standing up for their rights in a setting that is the ‘40s, seriously warmed by cold, gay heart.

Ultimately, Ryan Murphy’s Hollywood is the perfect re-write of the Golden Era. Depictions of this era are too often dominated by conservative plotlines, uncomfortable misogyny, not to mention the disgusting casual racism and homophobia. So to see a group of underdog characters fighting back will give you all the feels.

The acting performances are also phenomenal. Shoutouts go to Queen Latifa and Jim Parsons for successfully bringing to the screen these real-life characters. Especially given their stature and reputation in the Hollywood scene currently, their performances are seriously impressive.

All-in-all, you should definitely watch Hollywood if you’re looking for something to binge in isolation. It’s fun, it’s camp and it’s truly a good time.
