Why Fans Think Taylor Swift’s Love Triangle Is A ‘Friends’ Easter Egg

So no one told you life was gonna be this way?

Over the course of her many years topping the charts, Taylor Swift has earned quite a reputation for hiding sneaky easter eggs in her songs – and her new album ‘Folklore’ is no exception.

Swift’s song ‘Betty’ – which is the 14th track on ‘Folklore’ – has fans speculating what it’s about and how it got its name, including theories it’s tied to an iconic Friends reference.

The lyrics of ‘Betty’ feature lines like, “would you tell me to go f*ck myself, or lead me to the garden? In the garden would you trust me?” and “If I told you it was just a summer thing? I’m only seventeen, I don’t know anything, but I know I miss you.”

Clearly, the song is about some sort of teenage romance and many fans believe ‘Betty’ is a woman who was being cheated on as part of a complicated love triangle.

Other fans think Swift chose the name ‘Betty’ as an easter egg for her famous pals Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds, who are yet to reveal their youngest child’s name.

However, there’s one fan theory about ‘Betty’ that really trumps them all. Twitter users found a clip from Friends in which Phoebe awkwardly sings about Ross’ love triangle with Julie and Rachel – with some coincidental code names.

Before playing, Phoebe says, “this is a song about a love triangle that I made up. It’s called ‘Two Of Them Kissed Last Night.’” She then launches into the song which begins with the lyric, “there was a girl, we’ll call her Betty.

It’s no surprise fans think Taylor Swift is referencing Friends in her song ‘Betty’. In a 2016 interview with Vogue, the singer said she wished she had written the theme song of Friends, she once named her fan’s cats ‘Monica and Chandler’ and has even been photographed wearing Friends pins.

Whether ‘Betty’ is about babies, love triangles, or is a cheeky nod to Friends, it’s an incredible song on an equally-as-impressive album.
