Back in 1992 Woody Allen was accused by his daughter, Dylan Farrow, of molesting her. Despite the fact that she was only seven when she spoke up, she has never backed down from her allegations or changed her story. In 2014, she published an open letter detailing how the abuse had affected her life, and in 2017 she refreshed the allegations in an op-ed. Both had a massive impact. Yet even after Dylan Farrow published her original letter, people continued to defend Woody Allen.
As a number of employees from the publisher who accepted Woody Allen’s memoirs – Hatchette – protest outside their employers building today, here is a list of just some of the celebrities who have outright defended Woody Allen in the years after Dylan Farrow’s letter was published.
Scarlett Johansson – Worked with him on Match Point (2005), Scoop (2006) and Vicky Cristina Barcelona (2008). In 2019, she said that “I love Woody. I believe him, and I would work with him anytime.”
Selena Gomez – Worked with him on A Rainy Day in New York (2019). Went ahead with the project despite her mum telling her not to. Her co-star, Timothée Chalamet promised that all the money he made from the film would be donated to charity.
Blake Lively – Worked with him on Café Society (2016). Said he was “very empowering.”
Kate Winslet – Worked with him on Wonder Wheel (2017). Said that “Woody Allen is an incredible director. So is Roman Polanski. I had an extraordinary working experience with both of those men.”
Miley Cyrus – Worked with him on Crisis in Six Scenes (2016). Said that “From the way I saw him with his family, I never saw him be anything but an incredible person and a really great dad.”
Justin Timberlake – Worked with him on Wonder Wheel (2017). Said that “I chose to not get into it – I really don’t dive into any of that stuff with anybody.”
Kristen Stewart – Worked with him on Café Society (2016). Said that “If we were persecuted for the amount of shit that’s been said about us that’s not true, our lives would be over.”
Alec Baldwin – Worked with him on To Rome with Love (2012). In 2018, he said that working with Woody Allen was “one of the privileges of my career.”
Jeff Goldblum – Worked with him on Annie Hall (1977). In 2019, he said that “Even though I feel like this cultural shift [the #MeToo movement] is very, very positive and long overdue and I support it wholeheartedly and take it very seriously, I also admire his body of work. So I would consider working with him again, until I learned something more.
