We Did The Grim Maths Of Christian Bale's Weight Losses And Gains Over His Wild Career

Bateman to Batman to fat man.

It’s not an exaggeration to declare Christian Bale is one of the finest actors of our generation. But for all the intensity he brings to the big screen, the thing that’ll always be associated with Christian Bale as an actor is the dramatic weight gains and losses he’s gone through for the sake of a movie role.

Since Bale’s weight is usually what people mostly talk about when it comes to his work, we decided to lean right into that by tallying up every single kilo he’s burned off or stacked on over the course of his illustrious career.

Speaking of movies, the GOAT team talk about how COVID-19 has affected the release of content on ‘It’s Been A Big Day For…’ below:

Starting his career as a child actor, Christian Bale has been in a tonne of movies but not every single one involves weight loss or gains due to various reasons, such as lack of coverage or it not being required for the character.

As such, we can only do the grim math based on knowledge that’s publicly available so there’s a possibility we may be a few kilos off here and there. Not that accuracy really matters for this as this is all to satisfy the curiosity of all those movie fans out there.

What we do know is that Christian Bale’s average everyday weight is about 84 kg, so we’ll use that as a baseline. For movies where there’s not a known number but a physical transformation is evident, we’ll just go with a conservative guesstimate for the sake of keeping the math clean.

To make this easier, we’ll go through all of Christian Bale’s movies where we know he’s gained or lost weight in chronological order.

  • American Psycho (2000) – He got jacked but was pretty damn lean, so let’s say 4.5 kg here based on his workout routine and diet.
  • The Machinist (2004) – Yep, it’s THAT movie where he lost about 28.5 kg to play an insomniac.
  • Batman Begins (2005) – Hoo boy, this one is a rollercoaster. He first put on about 27 kg to return to his normal weight after The Machinist before adding ANOTHER 13.5 kg. He then shed 9 kg after that because he actually got too big and couldn’t fit in the Bat Suit.
  • Rescue Dawn (2006) – To play a P.O.W, he lost somewhere between 25 to 29 kg. Let’s just split the difference and go with 27 kg.
  • The Prestige (2006) – He then went back to his normal weight to play a magician so that’s 27 kg back.
  • The Dark Knight (2008) – Not as dramatic of a weight gain as in Batman Begins and he looks closer to his American Psycho physique so let’s put 4.5 kg here.
  • Terminator Salvation (2009) – He looks a bit leaner here due to the post-apocalyptic setting, so let’s be generous and put this as a 6.5 kg weight loss from The Dark Knight.
  • The Fighter (2010) – Not his most dramatic weight loss look but 13.5 kg is nothing to scoff at.
  • The Dark Knight Rises (2012) – He looks like he did in The Dark Knight and factoring in his Fighter weight as a starting point, this looks to be about a 20.5 kg weight gain.
  • Out Of The Furnace (2013) – Subtle but noticeable loss here. Let’s say 2 kg here.
  • American Hustle (2013) – He packed on 19.5 kg for this and boy did it show. Literally.
  • Exodus: Gods And Kings (2014) – Dark Knight physique vibes for this one so let’s round that to an 18 kg loss to factor in his American Hustle weight.
  • Hostiles (2017) – Another subtle 2 kg loss here.
  • Vice (2018) – It’s American Hustle all over again as he put on 19.5 kg to play Dick Cheney.
  • Ford V Ferrari (2019) – He had to shed his Vice belly and then some to play the slim Ken Miles, which amounted to a whopping 32 kg loss all up.

So in total, Christian Bale has gained at least 136 kg and lost at least 138.5 kg for his many movie roles (that we know of). Adding all that up, Christian has stacked on and burned a total 274.5 kg over the course of his career.

Yes, it’s a lot.

Keep in mind that all this weight Christian Bale has gained and lost is just for movie roles and doesn’t include gains and losses that have happened as he’s just living his normal life.

Still though, that’s a hell of a lot of weight to lose and gain just for movie roles. But hey, that’s why he has an Oscar and a reputation for being a fine actor while I’m just someone doing the math on how fat or skinny he’s gotten in his pursuit for acting greatness.
