Today I Learned That Sable From Animal Crossing Has A Super Grim Backstory

Someone please give Sable a hug.

I spent more hours than I’ll ever admit to playing Animal Crossing. We all had our favourite villagers – Goldie and Wolfgang were mine – and some that we didn’t really gel with. I never really bothered talking to Sable that much, preferring to chat to her sister Mabel whenever I went to the tailor shop instead. I’m slightly regretting that now, because I’ve learned Sable’s backstory and I want to give that animated hedgehog a hug.

If you tried to talk to Sable while playing any version of Animal Crossing, she’d politely ask to be left alone to do her work, and so I did. Turns out if you befriended her enough she’ll start to open up about her life from before the shop.

Sable is the older of the sisters, and she was left to look after Mabel when their parents died. It’s not certain how their parents died, but we know that Sable herself was only young. The reason she’s so introverted has a lot to do with all of the responsibility she was unexpectedly landed with at a young age.

I’m not crying, you’re crying.

If you play Animal Crossing: City Folk, you can get even more info. Sable will tell you that Labelle – the fashionable hedgehog who works in the big city – is their middle sister, Label. After their parents’ death, Label changed her name and  left her sisters behind to become a fashion designer in the city.

Labelle starts sending Mabel letters as the game goes on, and by the end, Mabel will tell you that she hopes Sable and Label will start talking again.

In Animal Crossing: New Leaf, it seems that her wish has been granted as Label moves home to work in the tailor shop to work with Sable and Mabel. If you thought that was the happy ending though, you’d be wrong. Sable in Happy Home Designer Sable tells you how scared she is that Mabel will move away like Label did.

So that’s cheery. Now if you don’t mind, I’ll be sobbing until Animal Crossing: New Horizons comes out.
