The Lengths Disney Went To Censoring 'Splash' Of All Films Is Hilarious

Seems like Disney has been taking inspiration from 'Cats'.

We remember Splash as that cute, family-friendly 80s flick that starred Tom Hanks and Darryl Hannah, but it seems like Disney remembers it as something with the potential to sully children’s minds because the House Of Mouse has decided to censor the film in the worst possible way you can think of.

Speaking of movies, the GOAT team talk about how the coronavirus pandemic has affected the release of films and TV shows on ‘It’s Been A Big Day For…’ below:

Now for those who haven’t seen Splash or need a reminder, it was a PG film with almost no scandalous bits, save for a few shots of Tom Hanks and Darryl Hannah kissing, and shot or two of Darryl’s bare butt, which is easily explained by the fact that she’s playing a mermaid.

But for some reason, Disney thought the sight of Darryl Hannah’s butt in Splash was too much for its young Disney+ audience and decided to censor it to keep their minds pure or something. This already is a bit suss (more on that in a bit) but it was made all the more hilarious by the piss poor job they did.

Words can’t quite express just how horrendously hilarious Disney’s attempts at censoring Splash are so just watch for yourself. Put it this way, it seems like Disney has taken a bit too much inspiration from Cats.

Yeah, it really is that bad.

Horrific CGI hair aside, this whole Splash censorship thing does call into question what Disney’s standards are when it comes to censoring content on its platforms.

When you consider some of the stuff that’s shown on Disney+ – like people getting killed in Avengers: Endgame, Snoke getting chopped in half in Star Wars: The Last Jedi, and some of Disney’s historically racist and offensive content – covering up Darryl Hannah’s butt in Splash seems incredibly unnecessary and a textbook example of pearl clutching.

And besides, I don’t recall seeing Disney kicking up a fuss over the shots of Hulk’s big green butt in Thor: Ragnarok. Guess this weird censorship hammer only applies to women and not giant green beings.

This whole thing with Splash has show everyone that a conversation needs to be had on Disney and the inconsistent way it wields its censorship hammer. But that’s for another day. For now though, I just have one thing to say to Disney: it’s okay to like mermaid butts and there’s no need to lie.
