The Gay Porn Awards Are More Supportive Of Women Than The Oscars

Not in front of my salad.

It’s well and truly movie awards season, and with the highly anticipated Oscars nominations dropping yesterday, reactions have been… lukewarm.

In case you missed it, here’s the recap:

Women definitely copped a lot of the Oscar snubs, particularly in the Best Director category. It was an entirely male category, made up of the same dudes who were nominated in the Best Director category at the BAFTAS and the Golden Globes.

It didn’t take long for entire lists to be put together of films that women directed amazing films in 2019, cause let’s be real, there were a lot.

So where should we look to for literally any inclusivity? May I suggest: the Gay Porn Awards.

The Str8 Up Gay Porn Awards were held last week in Hollywood, and the Best Directors category wasn’t made up of 100% men. A woman who goes by Mr Pam was nominated for Outstanding Achievement In Direction Of A Film Or Series for her work on a film called Scared Stiff 2.

To reiterate, the Gay Porn Awards are awards for guys, about guys, and given to guys. The fact that they’ve got a more diverse Best Directors category than the biggest mainstream film awards should tell us pretty much everything we need to know.

In the entire 92 years that the Oscars have been around, only five women have ever been nominated for Best Director. Lina Wertmüller for Seven Beauties in 1976, Jane Campion for The Piano in 1993, Sofia Coppola for Lost in Translation in 2003, Kathryn Bigelow for The Hurt Locker in 2009, and most recently Greta Gerwig for Lady Bird in 2017.

The only woman to have ever won in the category is Kathryn Bigelow.

Every year a controversy like this comes out about the Oscars, and every year we hope the next one will be better. I, for one, think I’m just going to give up on hoping entirely and throw all my support behind porn awards.
