‘Parasite’ Is Coming Early To Your Couch, Here Are The Easter Eggs To Hunt

Keep a watchful eye out.

SPOILERS AHEAD for ‘Parasite’! You’ve been warned!

Parasite had stunning slow burn of a journey in 2019, starting with critical raves at the Cannes Film Festival and building momentum until it all culminated in a brilliant victory lap at the 2020 Oscars.

Now there’s a chance you may have missed Parasite during it’s cinematic run in Australia, but no need to worry because the critically-acclaimed film will be arriving early to your couch when it drops on Stan on April 11, subtitles and all.

Speaking of Parasite and the Oscars, the GOAT team talk about the Academy Awards’ massive blunder on the big night on ‘It’s Been A Big Day For…’ below:

Since it’s Easter when Parasite arrives on Stan in Australia, and the film is stuffed to the brim with tiny details and Easter Eggs, we thought it would be appropriate to list some of the most notable ones that have been sprinkled throughout this brilliant movie.

So without further ado, let the Parasite Easter Egg hunt begin. Once again, there will be MAJOR SPOILERS ahead.

There are scenes Parasite where there are clear lines separating the rich and poor

As the Parasite depicts the relationship between the working class Kim family and the wealthy Park family, director Bong Joon-ho makes sure to show us on several occasions how characters on different ends of the affluence spectrum literally and figuratively cross lines.

The beer tells a story in of itself

The Kim family really like their beer, especially FiLite, which is considered a cheap beer. But when they start working to the wealthy Parks, they suddenly start drinking Sapporo beer. Why the sudden beverage change?

Well Sapporo is a premium beer and something the Kim family couldn’t afford before becoming a, well, parasite in the Park family’s arse.

The housekeeper has a big appetite

Parasite drops a few funny lines early on about how the Park family’s housekeeper had an appetite big enough for two people. Well this wasn’t just a throwaway joke as it foreshadows the wild turn where we discover the housekeeper smuggling food to her husband, who has been hiding in the Park’s basement this whole time.

“We need a new housekeeper.”

The Kim family patriarch has been moonlighting as a train designer

One of the most eyecatching things in Parasite is the stunning house owned by the Park family and it is mentioned that it was designed by an architect named Namgoong.

This is clearly a reference to the character of Namgoong (who was a train design specialist) in Parasite director Bong Joon-ho’s previous film, Snowpiercer.

As an extra sweet cherry on top of this Easter Egg, Namgoong was played by none other than Song Kang-ho, who also plays the Kim patriarch in Parasite. Talk about a small world.

Just ‘A Glass Of Soju’ to make the ending go down easier

The film ends on a grim note where Ki-woo, son of the poor Kim family, vows to earn enough money to buy the house where his father is trapped in, all while knowing he’ll never realistically do it.

Well it appears that there’s an extra layer in this downbeat ending in the form of the ending credits song, ‘A Glass Of Soju’. During a Q&A, Bong Joon-ho says the song is about how Ki-woo spends his days working jobs and saving money.

But the biggest clanger is the original title Bong had for ‘A Glass Of Soju,’ which was ‘564 Years.’ What does that mean? Well according to Bong, they did the math on how long it’ll take Ki-woo to save up enough money to buy the boujee house and it worked out to be, yep you guessed it, 564 years.
