Now The Logies Have Been Canned, The Award For Most Cooked Moment Goes To…

Who thought that 'Neighbours' dance routine was a good idea?

It’s TV’s night of nights in Australia, but sadly due to COVID-19 concerns, The Australian Logies have been cancelled, so let’s reflect on the most iconic moments. Originally due to take place on the 28th of June on the Gold Coast, fans were shocked that The Logies had been canned as opposed to being postponed. But, given the uncertainty of these times, we can’t blame their decision.

According to a statement from TV Week, the 2021 Logies will be an “epic event”  that awards not only that year, but the year that missed out. Looks like the competition’s going to be stiff in 2021!

So, while we wait for next year to roll around to see which lucky duck snaps up the Golden Logie, let’s reflect on all the cooked moments that have come out of the Logies in recent years. And the nominees are…

Mr. G’s Musical Medley (2008)

Summer Height’s High was a cultural reset. While We Can Be Heroes: Finding the Australian of the Year debuted a few years prior, it was this high-school mockumentary that cemented Chris Liliey as a household name. One of the more popular characters in this series was drama-teacher, Mr. G, who’s charm stole the hearts of all Australians. That sentiment couldn’t be better captured by this performance which sees a standing ovation from celebs in the audience of the 2008 Logies. Why is it on this list for most cooked moments at the Logies? Well, given the cooked inappropriate jokes, we think it’s a contender for the winner.

Tom Gleeson Winning The Golden Logie (2019)

It was a contentious moment when Tom Gleeson took out the golden Logie last year – and even he knew that. In his acceptance speech, Tom Gleeson said, “I’m in a tricky spot because I like it and I hate it at the same time. I can tell you this, I’m not the most popular person on television, I’ll tell you that…. But I can tell you this, I do host the highest-rating game show in Australia… turns out I’m just really good at manipulating people in the media to do things for me, which if you think about it, it’s why we’re all here, so maybe I do deserve this award.” God bless.

Bert Newton Called Muhammad Ali “Boy” (1978)

Offt… This Logies moment is certainly hard to watch. In this Logies from the late ’70s depicts a young Bert Newtown says “I like the boy” when talking about Muhammad Ali. He got a roar of concern in the audience and for good reason. In America, ‘boy’ was considered a racial slur directed at African Americans. You can see Ali’s reaction in the clip above.

Joan Rivers Threw Her Logie (2006)

In 2006, two important cultural moments happened; High School Musical came out and Joan Rivers dropped the most iconic Logies speech of all time. At this Logie Awards, Joan Rivers was a guest of honour but the audience had no idea what was coming. Before even a mere intro, Joan Rivers managed to throw a dig at Tom Cruise and yell “I don’t know why the f**k I’m here.” The rest of the speech involves throwing a Logie onto the floor and calling it the “ugliest” award she’s ever seen. We highly recommend you watch this clip, equipped with reaction shots from Osher Günsberg, Pink and so much more.

The Neighbours Musical Number (2005)

Neighbours is a core part of the Australian television industry, so it’s no wonder they were awarded for their efforts. In 2005, the cast of Neighbours was inducted into the TV Week Hall of Fame, which – while well deserved – was not without a trainwreck of a performance. Coinciding with the show’s 20th Anniversary, this performance is so epic, you’ll need to see it to believe it. No spoilers, but Harrold raps in it. Honestly, anyone of these moments could be the winner of the most cooked moment at the Logies, so we’ll let you pick the winner.
