Megs And Haz Are Under Fire For Not Stepping Up Against Netflix

Meghan Markle, Harry and the Obamas are getting their share of backlash after literally doing nothing over the controversial French film ‘Cuties’.

Since four of the most famous people in the world have a hefty deal with Netflix at the moment, the public think it’s up to them to stand up against the streaming platform and the controversial film.

Social media users have taken to Twitter to share their frustration over the fact that neither have made a comment about the film:

The former royal couple signed a deal thought to be worth $150 million with the network earlier this year. While the Obamas announced in 2018 they had entered a multi-year producing partnership with the online streaming service.

Cuties follows an 11-year-old girl named Amy (Fathia Youssouf) as she tries to find her place growing up in a poor suburb of Paris. She becomes friends with a group of girls who have their own dance troupe proving controversial of her family’s strict rules.

In an interview with Netflix, Cuties director Maïmouna Doucouré said that the movie incorporated elements of her own childhood in its portrayal of Amy’s struggles between her traditional values of her Senegalese and Muslim upbringing and Western society.

“I recreated the little girl who I was at that age.

“Growing up in two cultures is what gave me the strength and the values I have today.”

With social media being a main attraction for children growing up today, she says the more sexualised a woman appears on social media the more girls perceive her as successful.

“Children just imitate what they see to achieve the same result without understanding the meaning,” she said. “And yeah, it’s dangerous.”

Since the release of the film, the hashtag #CancelNetflix has been trending on Twitter with thousands lobbying to get the film removed.

Last month Netflix removed the promotional image for the film:

“We’re deeply sorry for the inappropriate artwork that we used for ‘Cuties,’” a spokeswoman for Netflix said. “It was not OK, nor was it representative of this French film which won an award at Sundance. We’ve now updated the pictures and description.”

Politicians have also shared their thoughts on the film with Senator Tom Cotton, Republican of Arkansas, calling it “disgusting”:
