Like Bond, Billie Eilish's Oscar Performance Has Some Tough Competition

Shaken and stirred.

What a week Billie Eilish has had. Not only did she top Australia’s most prestigious music countdown with a Sydney-pedestrian-crossing-light sampling banger, but she swept up the floor at the 62nd Grammy Awards.

We spoke about Billie Eilish and 007 on this episode of It’s Been A Big Day For…

Yep, she is the second person in history to take all four of the big four awards, and she’s still a teenager. Well, it seems like she’s gunning for EGOT status, as she tackles the Oscars stage with a special performance.

It’s unclear what song she will be singing, but we think its extremely safe to say that she will be debuting her brand new Bond theme song at movie’s night of nights!

A theme song? From the ‘bad guy’? Duh!

It’s extremely exciting, but it should be noted that the bar is very high. Let’s take a look back at all the Bond songs from the Daniel Craig era, just to see how tough the competition is.

Sam Smith – Writings On The Wall (Spectre)

The last Bond movie to come out was released in 2015 and had a phenomenal song to go with it. ‘Writings On The Wall’ saw Sam Smith and their angelic pipes explore falsetto and bass in an Orchestral dream. The song topped the UK singles chart, won an Academy Award for Best Original Song and the Golden Globe Award for Best Original Song at the 73rd Golden Globe Awards. Not bad Sam, not bad.

Adele – Skyfall (Skyfall)

Adele was having a killer year back in 2012; slaying the Grammys stage and achieving record-breaking success around the world. But as soon as she finished releasing singles off of 21, did she slow down? No way. The British singer hopped on the official song for this Bond film which not only won the Brit Award for Best British Single at the 2013 BRIT Awards but made an impact at the Oscars. The song was nominated for and won the Academy Award for Best Original Song. Notably, it was the first time a Bond song had won.

Jack White & Alecia Keys – Another Way to Die (Quantum of Solace)

The first duet in a Bond song, this song was groundbreaking in so many ways. Firstly, to see these two distinct musicians come together on this soundtrack number was a cross-genre moment we were so excited for. Also, this song was nominated for Best Short Form Music Video at the 2009 Grammy Awards and nominated for Best Song at the 2008 Critics’ Choice Awards.

Chris Cornell – You Know My Name (Casino Royale)

The first Daniel Craig film took more of a low key approach to the theme song, opting for the late Soundgarden vocalist, Chris Cornell. The track was incredible, nabbing a Grammy Award nomination for Best Song Written For Motion Picture, Television Or Other Visual Media in 2008.

We would be too, Billie.

Which brings us to Billie. We have no doubt that Billie Eilish is going to kill this performance. It’ll be super interesting to see if the songstress takes her iconic whisper down a familiar route, or if she switches it up and belts over the bombastic instrumentals that Bond’s themes are notorious for.

What will happen? We’re going to have to tune into the 92nd Academy Awards on Monday, the 10th February at 12:00pm AEDT.
