Lin Manuel Miranda, aka the genius behind the whole thing, announced the new release date yesterday on Twitter saying, “It’s only a matter of time…Our Hamilton film. THIS July 3rd. On Disney+.” Check out the Tweet here.

Now, while this announcement has got musical theatre kids and pretty much everyone else excited, it is also sparking a bit of speculation on the Internet as to whether or not the project will be censored. In the past, we’ve seen Disney Plus alter some of their old projects to fit their family-friendly image and it’s got fans wondering if Hamilton will receive a similar treatment.

An example of this happened earlier this year when the Internet became aware of the lengths that Disney censors were going to. In April, it became apparent that the arse of the main character in the ’80s film Splash was digitally CGI’d out and replaced with an extension of her hair. Having said this, it should be noted that the Hulk’s arse was not CGI’d out of Thor Ragnarok, but you get the gist.

So far, Disney hasn’t really needed to adjust the language of their content for a family-friendly audience because most of their content already fit it. With Pixar, Disney and National Geographic under their belt, there aren’t exactly many moments that have required revisiting. But, Hamilton is a different story.

The Hamilton soundtrack is over 2 hours long and boasts a whole bunch of F-bombs, S-bombs, not to mention the themes of prostitution and the abundance of violence (they’re literally in a war). So, it’ll be interesting to see what Disney cut out. According to Lin Manuel Miranda, no “scenes” will be cut from the film, but some words may be bleeped.

At a red-carpet event, a New York Times reporter asked Lin Manuel Miranda how Disney would deal with the language, to which he said, “I think we’ll figure it out when we get there…” Keep in mind, the film was originally scheduled for a 2021 release date. Lin also added “But, we’re not going to cut any sections of the show… If we have to mute a word here or there to reach the largest audience possible, I’m OK with that, because your kids already have the original language memorized. I don’t think we’re depriving anyone of anything if we mute an f-bomb here or there to make our rating” Check out the Tweets here:

Are you excited for the Hamilton film despite the censorship worries? Because honestly, we’re just happy we don’t have to Wait For It (Wait For It).
