Here Are Movies To Watch If You Love A Strong, Independent Female Lead

It’s International Women’s Week and we have your entertainment sorted.

If your Netflix recommendations are anything like mine, I know you love a strong female lead. And why wouldn’t you? Movies that are lead by a strong female protagonist are, by far, superior in every way possible. Prove me wrong… See you can’t!

But, if you’re on the hunt for some new flicks or you feel like watching an oldie but a goodie, we’ve got you. Here are some movies to watch, now that it’s International Women’s Week!

The Invisible Man (2020)

The Invisible Man

If you’re someone who loves a good thriller, make sure you check out this flick. We realise it hasn’t been out for too long, so we won’t spoil anything, but we will say that this one is a cracker. Follow Cecilia Kass as she tries to achieve clarity, navigating through a society where no one believes her and her ex is seemingly invisible. Tickle your fancy? The Invisible Man is in theatres now!

Charlie’s Angels (2000)

Charlie’s Angels

They don’t make movies like Charlie’s Angels anymore. Drew Barrymore, Cameron Diaz and Lucy Liu fight bad guys, solve crimes and do it in the most fun way possible. The direction and editing are fast and fun, leaving not a dull moment in sight. Not to mention, the soundtrack is amazing. Honestly, name a better trio… I’ll wait.

The Devil Wears Prada (2006)

The Devil Wears Prada

When it comes to strong women in movies, it’s almost impossible to look past Miranda Priestly, Andy Sachs and Emily Charlton. Played by Meryl Streep, Anne Hathaway and Emily Blunt, The Devil Wears Prada offered three characters who only spoke in iconic, quotable lines. This will forever be remembered as one of the greatest films of all time. I said what I said.

Miss Congeniality (2000)

Miss Congeniality

Take off that Bird Box mask and open your eyes for this throwback. Miss Congeniality is Sandra Bullock at her literal best. This icon stars as Gracie Hart, a masculine FBI agent who has to masquerade in a beauty pageant for a mission. Honestly, it’s as funny as it is heartwarming and it gives us one of the greatest scenes of all time

Matilda (1996)

Matilda

Who said you have to be a grown-up to be a strong, independent lead? This wonderful little girl – who happens to have powers – along with Miss Honey are against her parents and an evil principal in this hilarious Roald Dhal adaptation. Also, if you’ve ever wondered whatever happened to Miss Honey, don’t worry, we’ve got you.

Before we go stream all these movies, which iconic character are you?
