I’ve you’ve been struggling to spend your V-Bucks this morning, don’t worry, you’re not alone. The Epic Games Store has been down for hours and it’s all because some greedy gamers were gunning for a freebie.

Epic Games has been running a countdown on their online store leading up to the launch of a free game at 1 am (AEST) this morning. Last night, that game was revealed to be Grand Theft Auto V, which you can imagine, caused quite a ruckus.
It turns out the demand for the most successful game of all time was so high that the entire store was down completely, presumably given the number of page-refreshes that was going on.
Epic Games actually acknowledged the store crash that the Rockstar smash caused in a Tweet, saying:
Also, according to a now-deleted Tweet, GTA V will be available to download until May 21st.
The heavy traffic on the online store this morning seemingly affected other Epic Games shops too.
The Fortnite Twitter account made a statement on social issues that said they were “investigating issues”. In addition to Fortnite, Epic Games’ Battle Breakers (which is a mobile game) is also experiencing issues. The power of a free game, we tell you.

While this is certainly an exciting time for GTA V fans, it should be noted that this is not the first time the Epic Games Store has given away free games. The company said that they would be dropping free games throughout 2020 and honestly, we couldn’t ask for a better present.
