Even Kristen Stewart Admits The Charlie's Angels Remake Was 'Hard To Promote'

"Dude, we just wanted to have a good time."

It’s been about a month since the Charlie’s Angels reboot landed in cinemas, and sadly, time hasn’t been in the film’s favour.

Since it was released the film, directed by Elizabeth Banks and starring Kristen Stewart, has received mixed reviews and only grossed $56 million worldwide making the chances of a sequel pretty slim.

Hear the GOAT team chat about how and why the film bombed on It’s Been A Big Day For…

In a recent interview with Playlist, Charlie’s Angels star Kristen Stewart said she’s “bummed we probably won’t make another one.”

“Luckily, I’m not feeling gutted because I really am proud of the movie,” she said. “I’m so happy that it exists and can live in the world. Because I think for a lot of people it’s still kind of important even in a very non-serious way.”

“I think that the kind of the climate that we’re living in right now is polarising and it’s weird and it’s kind of hard to promote a movie like that,” she added. “And I think trying to have a really complicated, overly politicised feminist conversation in a five minute TV interview about Charlie’s Angels…I’m like, ‘Dude, we just wanted to have a good time.’”

Director Elizabeth Banks is also taking a lighthearted approach to criticism of the film. Last month the actress tweeted, “Well, if you’re going to have a flop, make sure your name is on it at least 4x. I’m proud of #CharliesAngels and happy it’s in the world.”

Banks might have finally accepted the fate of her film but last month she wasn’t so graceful. In an interview with The Wall Street Journal, Banks said, “you’ve had 37 Spider-Man movies and you’re not complaining! I think women are allowed to have one or two action franchises every 17 years – I feel totally fine with that.”

Considering how iconic the 00s reboot of Charlie’s Angels was, it doesn’t sound like there was enough demand for the latest reboot to be successful. However, it’s important to recognise and appreciate what the film was trying to do – celebrate powerful women.

Kudos to Kristen Stewart and Elizabeth Banks for rolling with the punches and remaining strong in the face of criticism. The angels would’ve been proud!
