As Billie Eilish and her parents spend the majority of the episode talking about their personal experiences with music, Justin Bieber really caused a tonal shift for the episode. As they were introducing the song, ‘As Long As You Love Me’ by Justin Bieber and Big Sean, Billie Eilish’s mum, Maggie Baird, offers the listener insight into Billie’s obsession.
Billie Eilish’s mum said, “(I remember) driving to the dance studio with Billie, playing this song, sobbing, and then driving back and sobbing… It was either Marina and the Diamonds or this, sobbing.”
“Not just this” Billie Eilish added, “It was all of Justin Bieber.” Billie Eilish’s mum continued, “Any Justin Bieber song, but I just happen to remember this one really well, and the video, and Billie talking to me about it, and being excited that it was coming out and just crying and crying. Everyone knows the whole Billie-Justin Bieber thing, but this song was a big part of it.”
“I would watch the music video for this song and just sob,” Billie added, before hitting play on the song. As the song started, Maggie Baird is faintly heard saying, “Omg she’s crying, I have to film it.”
You’d think that’d be the end of it right? The song would play and the family would move on to talking about the next artist. Well, you’d be very wrong. As we get past the first chorus, Billie Eilish is heard to say, “Ugh, I just said I don’t cry anymore and now I’m crying… I have to stop it” Then, the music stops. “Yeah, you’re going to cry,” Maggie Baird says.
Billie Eilish’s dad proceeds to console his daughter saying, “This is the power of music, this is why everyone listens to it and why we make it and why we do a show about it. You know? It gets to you at the root of your being somehow, it’s a non-intellectual process.”
But then, Billie Eilish and her family struck gold as Billie mum proceeds to discuss how she and Billie’s dad considered therapy for Billie’s obsession. “I just want to say, we did consider taking you to therapy because you were in so much pain over Justin Bieber,” Maggie said.
“You guys had conversations about taking me to therapy about my Bieber-ness?” Billie Eilish asked. “It was so intense, it caused you so much pain,” Maggie Baird replied.
Billie Eilish’s dad proceeded to talk about how he had a similar experience of fandoms, saying: “For me, it was the Beatles, at that age… it was just this ache to be part of that world and its why I understand your fans.”
