Big Brother 2020 Marks The End Of Reality TV As We Know It

The Big Brother you once knew is long gone.

Last night, the new season of Big Brother premiered to Australian audiences on a brand new network. As online discussion circulated around the new voice, the extravagance of the house, the shocking elimination and some of the more introverted characters, the premiere highlighted a change for reality tv as a whole, and it involved all the participants.

This season premiere of Big Brother felt different to seasons past because all the participants were seemingly playing towards their ideal edit.

Speaking of Aussie reality tv, we spoke about Masterchef on this episode of It’s Been A Big Day For…

In the past, Big Brother has been a launchpad for some of Australia’s most iconic C-list celebrities. These celebrities were born from their unfiltered persona, captivating audiences around Australia with each and every outlandish statement or action. Recently, we’ve seen less of these “unfiltered” characters and more of people doing the wildest of stunts to ensure their 15 minutes of fame when the show’s all said and done.

But, last night’s premiere marked a new era for Big Brother. In 2020, we’re at the height of reality tv. The boom has well and truly stuck with zeitgeist shows Keeping Up With The Kardashians, RuPaul’s Drag Race and not to mention, all of the dating shows that we may or may not have covered here. And with this boom of reality tv, comes a rise in contestants that know how to play the game.

$250,000 is the prize money on Big Brother but, at the end of the day, that’s not the only thing participants can get out of the show. Big Brother has become a launch-pad for influencers, tv presenters and media personalities, so if these people play their cards right, they can secure themselves a portion of the spotlight when the shows all wrapped up.

As a result, it’s in the contestant’s best interest to play nice, to be everyone’s friend and to remain the underdog because ultimately, that’s who Australia roots for. Even when Talia won the challenge last night making her a threat, she remained likeable and someone to root for because of her emotional reaction to placing people in an elimination position.

And honestly, Talia isn’t the only one. There hasn’t been any contestant so far that has encapsulated the true essence of what Big Brother used to be. But who knows, time will tell. But from first impressions,  get ready for a whole season of “participants” playing to the cameras, only showing you their good side in the hopes of getting a career out of this prime-time slot.
